🌱📣 Descarga en nuestra liga en bio o en la dirección web prosperingbackyards.com/final-report ⬇️⬇️⬇️ We are happy to share that our final report is now available in SPANISH! Download this report for FREE to learn more about the history of Exide Battery Plant and the WHY behind community mobilization to shut down this toxic plant in Southeast Los Angeles. Our research period may have come to a close, but we continue to learn what we have learned collecting and analyzing soil samples, working with community scientists and gathering resources to prevent exposure to toxic lead contamination in our city. We invite everyone to download a free copy of our final report available in English and Spanish to access information and resources to help us get lead out of our communities! #ProsperingBackyards #envronmentalreport #enespañol #leadfree #LosAngeles

Happy World Soil Day! “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities.” Here are some orgs working towards healing the soil: 1. Moving Mountains, a city-scale initiative by @MetabolicStudio , diverting clean soil away from our waste streams, and into powerful remediation practices. 2. Join Metabolic Studio for soil testing and hands-on workshops promoting ecological repair through community-scale remediation practices! 3. @LACompost offers Angelenos opportunities to divert their food waste from landfill, improve their soil health and engage with community composting at green spaces throughout LA County. 4. At Community Compost Day LA, LA Compost and partners share valuable resources such as compost, trees, native plants, seeds, and mulch, while promoting environmental education, soil stewardship, and deeper community connection. 5. The DENA Soil Project, a collaboration of @ourcommunitycompound , @firepoppyproject , @evolvealtadena , and @soilwise.earth , trained NDLON/Pasadena Community Job Center day laborers in Altadena on post-fire soil bioremediation, equipping them to interpret soil tests and create remediation plans. 6. SoilWise guided a community bioremediation workday at the @altadenacommunitygarden last May; our recent post-treatment soil testing shows major reductions in soil lead, as well as promising reductions in PFAS. 7. At @Test_Plot , we plant a diverse range of native species to support life above and below ground. The feedback loop between leaf litter, soil biodiversity, and plant communities is key to supporting a healthy, resilient urban ecology. 8. Before (2021) and after (2025) photos of the Test Plot Elephant Hill Project. 9. Since 2022, @ProsperingBackyards has collaboratively worked to heal urban soils, offering free soil testing and organizing a community science research project to reduce lead exposure in South East LA. 10. Danielle Stevenson (@caer.earth ), demonstrates soil sampling to a group at a post-fire site in Altadena as part of Sense/Make - an art/science bioremediation education program hosted in collaboration with @Fathomers . Recap of this amazing panel at the California Land Recycling Conference in Carson @prosperingbackyards was invited to speak on. The session entitled “Community Science in Action: Healing Soil, Sharing Power” included Maru Garcia @marugfe and Rachel Cellinese @i_art_rachel from @prosperingbackyards Dr. Daisy Rosas Vargas @dr.daisyrosasv from @soilwise.earth and @latinasinstem and Dr. Danielle Stevenson @danielle.stevenson7 from @caer.earth . Panelists shared how art, bioremediation, and community science are transforming contaminated and fire-damaged land into spaces of healing and resilience. From lead contamination to post-fire recovery, this panel spotlighted community-led solutions rooted in Indigenous knowledge, open-source science, and environmental justice. Thank you to the Center for Creative Land Recycling @land_recycling for hosting this conference and having us. 📸 Swipe through to see moments from this inspiring conversation! #CALRC2025 #EnvironmentalJustice #CommunityScience #Soil #LandRecycling #Bioremediation #DTSC #EPA

📰 We’re in the LA Times! A powerful new article in the @latimes explores the growing concern over soil contamination after January’s devastating fires and the community-led efforts to address this issue. Among the many voices working toward solutions, @marugfe from Prospering backyards shared our work using zeolites to reduce lead exposure in contaminated soil as well as our recent workshops with “healing toolkits” that address both the practical and emotional impacts of soil contamination. García emphasized that true remediation must be a holistic process that includes supporting the well-being of affected communities. Read the full story in the @latimes link in highlights Concerned about your soil? Follow the link in bio to download our free soil healing toolkit which includes resources on how to mitigate the risks of lead contamination and more! #ProsperingBackyards #LATimes #soil #soilhealth #FireRecovery #EnvironmentalJustice #SoilRemediation #Altadena

How Can Zeolites can help reduce lead in soil? Prospering backyards along with our community partners conducted research using zeolites (natural minerals with a sponge-like structures) to reduce lead exposure in yards of community members affected by Exide Battery plants lead contamination. What are zeolites? They’re minerals made from aluminum, silicon, and oxygen. Their tiny pores act like microscopic sponges/ sieves that trap lead, locking it away so it can’t harm people, pets, or plants. Lead in soil can be dangerous if it’s “bioavailable” meaning it can move with water and enter the food chain. Zeolites encapsulate lead, making it non-bioavailable and safer! We tested three treatments: 1️⃣ Zeolite alone 2️⃣ Compost + mulch 3️⃣ Zeolite + compost + mulch We spread these on top of contaminated soil, and with the help of the Natural History Museum’s department of mineralogy analyzed lead levels in soil sample for a year. The result of lab tested soil showed zeolites can trap lead effectively, reducing lead exposure and helping create safer, healthier backyards!
