Harnessing the wind below Cerro Torre and Fitzroy 🏔 @drgeoffwilson and @kitalewilson on their successful net-zero crossing of the Patagonian Ice Sheet - one of the fastest receding ice sheets on earth. The expedition took them 10 days and included battling through thick rainforest, navigating crevasse fields, dodging avalanches and a 60 Knot storm! The drop. (1/2) After a committing 24 hours navigating dense bands of sea ice, the northern tip of Spitzbergen came into view. Unlike the steep jagged peaks to the south, our landing point was a low-lying arctic flat that protruded from the island. The Nanook cut through the glassy water, sending ripples far out into the distance. The occasional walrus lounged on small ice flows as we motored past. The still morning was short lived and we soon had to reef in on the main sail as katabatic winds picked up - gusting down the enormous glaciers on the island. The DTD (distance to destination) began to quickly drop as we sailed through the ice free bay towards our drop point. We all huddled around the nav screen watching as we neared a momentous point in the journey - 80 Degrees North. A few miles from shore we reached this latitude. As we dropped sails, dad and I loaded out skis, sleds, packs and tatt onto the deck. We knew it would need to be a speedy exit, we didn’t want Crusty and Michael this far north for longer than needed; the ice pack to our north could come back at any point and trap the crew. A thick band of ice guarded the shoreline. Too thick to get The Nanook through(we tried)and too unstable to ski on. The wind had whipped up a small swell which carried ice down the bay at walking speed. Eventually we found ourselves a section that seemed less dense, using the tender we nudged our way through the pack. A Small Opening. After a whirlwind resupply in Longyearbyen the Nanook was ready to continue further north to the tip of Spitsbergen. We had been monitoring the ice maps and chatting with local skippers to get an understanding of how accessible this area was. The verdict: the ice was still too thick to head north. Months of preparation, a committing voyage from Canada and our expedition could be over before we made it to the drop off. As a crew we sat and waited, contemplating our next move. It had been a delicate game we’d been playing, balancing Atlantic, Arctic and alpine seasons to try to get the perfect timing. But it hadn’t aligned for us. Yet, as it has been the case across this entire odyssey, we soon were given a small hope. A gale-force southerly came in for three days. The winds slowly pushed back the ice pack towards the North Pole. We watched with astonishment as a small opening emerged in the pack, leading exactly to our drop of point.  We threw lines and launched out into the tail end of the blow, rounding the northern end of the Spitsbergen we were greeted by mostly open water. We weaved our way further east between the remnants of the once impassable ice.  A passing ice-breaker transmitted “Ice Pack is sitting about 34NM to your north, slowly drifting back”. Our small opening would soon close on us with the risk of trapping The Nanook and crew in the crushing ice. We were on the clock. Svalbard 🇳🇴 After battling heads winds for almost a week the sea calmed and the wind swung to the south. Since leaving the Faroe Islands the nights have grown shorter and shorter. Now we have 24 hour day light. In the bright evening light a small white triangle is spotted by Michael. We all pile out onto deck stare at the strange shape. What we initially label a lone iceberg quickly becomes a jagged collection of snowcapped peaked stretching across the horizon. We’ve made it to the little island on top of our globe - Svalbard. Low emmissions means low speed. Sailing carries you to a place at a modest pace, but the arrival is unlike anything else. Later the next morning we were enter the wide fjord on our way to Longyearbyen. The approach is complete. Now the real expedition begins. Crossing into the Arctic Circle 🌐 North of the Faroe Islands is a seemingly endless expanse - the Norwegian Sea. Without the warmth of the jet stream the temperature has quickly dropped to below freezing. For the past couple days we have been riding a southerly making great headway, but the forecast shows that this is soon to change.  Off our port (left) side is Greenland... somewhere... and off our starboard (right) side is Norway... somewhere. We are cutting right through the middle of the Norwegian sea. A track that seems uncommon, indicated by the scarcity of other vessels in the surrounding 600km.  We have a new member of the crew, Michael, and the extra hands on deck are incredible, each of us gets an extra hour of sleep each night.  In the late afternoon, The Nanook quietly sails into the Arctic Circle. What this little sailboat has endured is beyond belief, and now she has achieved another feat. We all celebrate in our own way. Soon the wind swings to the north, it carries with it an even stronger bite. Its origin is our destination - the arctic. Ireland 🇮🇪 to the Faroe Islands 🇫🇴 (pt. 02) After 3 and a half days at sea the majestic Faroe Islands burst out of the sea mist Like a world time has forgotten. Tall cliffs soared above us, with bridal veil falls pouring dirfectly into the sea. Between us and port Torhavin however was a 3 mile wide maelstrom of current and steep sea. Caught off guard and ill prepared Nanook nearly rolled then recovered and we had a tough hour pushing through the madness. Soon enough we made safe waters and were surprised by my good friend French Polar Explorer Faysal Hanneche who had arrived to surprise us. Another amazing stop, meeting locals Turið and Hallar, eating Faroese delicacies, and getting help from the local experts to definitively fix our engine issue followed. The Faroese were incredibly welcoming and being people of the sea they were fascinated with how far we had come from down under. A local pre school group came alongside and seeing they had lost all their front teeth I asked if the Tooth Fairy made it to the remote Faroe Islands, their teacher in reply quipped “If the tooth fairy can find Australia, he can certainly find the Faroes !” A place we must return to… with real sadness we threw mooring lines and once more turned Nanook’s bow furthest north. Ireland 🇮🇪 to the Faroe Islands 🇫🇴 (Pt. 01) Our fishermen were a hardworking Irish father and son team Michael and Declan, they tied us up to the Killybegs wharf at close to 3 am local time. In no hurry at all they stayed on for a chat and some laughs as we prepared for much needed sleep. Our time in Ireland was magical, a mix of local mechanics, fishermen, Guinness, Pub food, pub singing, connecting with family not seen in way too long and eventually a sad farewell. As we pointed our nose into the Irish Sea this time we felt confident that Pete, our 74 year old Mechanic had diagnosed the issue (salt water forced up the exhaust into the engine block by huge following seas in the Atlantic) and fixed it. We had a sound and reliable engine and Nanook was operating well in all other areas. Kit was now onboard and despite missing Jordy, it felt natural and like old times. We worked well as crew and made good headway. Hitting useful wind quickly and for 2 days we made excellent progress, then met rough sea once more. Attempting to round the boat up to diminish sail, I turned the ignition on and felt heartsick as our prior issue had returned. Our engine was full of sea water once again… Crusty and I luckily had watched Irish Pete and in a rough sea we pulled apart the injectors, removed the top of the engine and used IV tubing and a syringe to drain the pistons of all water. An oil change and with a huge grin we heard the big “Donk” fire up once more. With some frustration with our marine advisors, we determined to only use the engine when absolutely necessary and to get another mechanics advice in the Faroe Isles.
