Pris Roos builds a new ‘home’ in the museum 🎨 Starting this week, artist @prisroos will be working in the Open Studio at @museumrembrandthuis ! Two days a week she will be creating art, live in the museum. As part of the exhibition ‘THUIS. The feeling of home in contemporary art’, she will build a large-scale installation: a new home made of recycled cardboard and pastels. Each room focuses on the personal story of a single individual. With this Open Studio, the Rembrandt House Museum returns briefly to its origins: an artist’s home where—both 400 years ago and today—new and innovative art is created. It is a very special week because it's the last week of the exhibition "what it is, what it means and what i would like it to be" curated by @thehoneytoast . Location: @tentrotterdam . My greatest and biggest inspiration of my whole life and art practice is my (toko) family. And for me, finally showing them, the exhibition in Rotterdam is the biggest compliment. To show what I do with the boxes, what kind of work I make, what my ideas are behind it and hearing my mum and dad and my colleagues say that they like it and them seeing around the portraits. It is a blessing. Today I gave them a private tour through the exhibition and explained the context and inspiration behind it. Before, we had coffee and tea at my home, went to Markthal and finished with dinner at Tai Wu with my brother and my sister and my greatest cutest loves Faith and Marcus. Best day ever. As you know, I have always worked at the toko since I was a teenager and I still work there. Since a kid I have been living and have been involved in the toko. As an artist, I am proud and find it also important to say that without the inspiration of this family I cannot be the artist that I am today. My inner child and as a child of immigrants, I am so so so mega proud and thankful. I am crying from the inside. Therefore again, I am grateful and blessed with various families in my life. Het is heel bijzonder om het gevoel te hebben dat je wordt gezien. Het gevoel van steun, liefde, zorg en aanmoediging. Ik wil werkelijk iedereen bedanken die me de afgelopen week, maanden, jaren en leven heeft toegejuicht, aangesproken, geknuffeld, toegesproken, aangemoedigd, voor ons heeft geduimd en ook waren er momenten van reflectie en afwijzing. Dit heeft me alleen maar meer het gevoel gegeven van “ik doe dit en blijf dit voor een reden doen”. Ik wil de mensen bedanken die me hun meest kwetsbare en liefdevolle momenten met me hebben gedeeld en dat ik dat mag laten zien zoals de prachtige @jahiquasim en lieve @xiangyuyeung , de liefdevolle @thesharvinramjan , de zorgzame @carmenpolitan , de oh zo sterke, maar ik voel je @shereelenting . Lieve Daniel die me een beeld en verhaal liet zien van zijn familie met hem. Dank aan @theaterrotterdam die me de ruimte heeft gegeven om muzikanten en artiesten van een ander perspectief te zien. Ik wil mijn galerist Julia en @minigalerie bedanken, want jij zag iets in me om me naar voren te brengen. Ik was altijd al fan van jou, een strijder die even in haar eentje een galerie uit de huiskamer is begonnen. Ik ben zo trots om onderdeel te zijn van gemeenschappen, van kunstenaars, van vrienden, van een stad, van een toko, van een buurt, van een familie, van strijders. Ik wil mijn ouders bedanken, mijn gekozen en bloedfamilie die me zo hard hebben toegejuicht, jullie weten wie jullie zijn. En iedereen die dit nu leest en mij steunt, ik voel zoveel liefde, kracht en aanmoediging. Dat is niet normaal, zo sterk. Ik ben zo trots op jullie. Dank je wel Nationale Nederlanden, art rotterdam, Kunsthal, juryleden. Het betekent echt zoveel voor een kunstenaar om hun verhaal te mogen vertellen. Thank you to @theaterrotterdam for making be a part of the team for Open Table. I had so much freedom to create new works for the various Open Table evenings where every subject such as activism, care system, housing crisis and as last on trending versus truth pushed my boundaries in my materials and thinking. For every subject I created two works, one before about my own perspective and I used a lot of the times my own hands or my self portrait in the image for the first work and the second one after the Open Table evening which felt like observing the evening and from there on make a new work. I have had much Joy and freedom to visualize dance, spoken words and conversation from the speakers, spoken word artists and the dancers. Thank you team TR and my absolute extra thank you to @jospinner who trusted me to be the pilot artist for this new series of TR. Tijdens Open Table: Trending vs. Truth op 24 februari jl, maakte Pris het (voorlopig) laatste kunstwerk voor ons waarin ze haar perspectief op het thema en de avond verbeeld. Het was elke keer weer heel interessant en verrassend om te zien hoe ze dat deed en ook deze keer is het werk weer heel mooi. @prisroos bedankt voor je waardevolle bijdragen en we gaan deze werken zeker nog terug zien bij @theaterrotterdam !

Ik ben zo ontzettend trots op mezelf en mijn (chosen) familie. Dat komt echt, omdat ik echt heb moeten leren om te genieten van de hoogtepunten. Yes, ik ben een ware steenbok en ook nog een dochter van hardwerkende immigranten. A double trouble. Hoogtepunten na het opstaan of na gepest te worden door klasgenoten als kind zijnde. Of een ander met wie je bent die je niet in je waarde ziet. Maar ook hoogtepunten na het tonen van hard werken of gewoonweg leren om jezelf te accepteren, dit ben ik gewoon. Dat leer ik niet alleen van mijn eigen reflecties, maar ook van anderen. Of dat nou mijn ouders, mijn broeders, mijn zusters zijn of van mensen die ik in de afgelopen jaren heb mogen ontmoeten. Een interview en ook een photoshoot laat me toch elke keer zien, ik mag echt zo trots zijn op mezelf. Ik leer elke dag dat achter elk verhaal, een heel sterk geschiedenis is van opstaan en vallen. Of dat nou bij mezelf, of een ander is. Ik was zo enorm verrast om te zien hoe mooi de interview samen met de prachtige foto’s zijn geworden. Eerlijk, ik leef elke dag met gedachte om nog meer mooie avonturen te beleven en dat met de wereld te mogen delen en dat weer door te geven en ook samen te delen. Dank je wel voor dit interview @fdpersoonlijk @ellenleijser en @mounirraji pfffff deze foto’s zijn zo hard. Besef, ik kwam net terug van een vlucht van 14 uur uit Jakarta, all jet lagged and all. Maar je hebt me gefotografeerd als een art hero/goddess. Dank je iedereen voor de immens grote support. Heb een mooie dag. My trip to West-Java was healing. Healing in a way that I am breathing fresh air of the trees, plants and soil of my ancestors. The air of earth that rains, that gives sun and wind. I am listening into the sounds of rain, the insects and animals, cars and the prayers of the locals around me. I hear the stories of the sister of my mother telling me that I used to play with Andy and that I drank Fanta merah. My aunt who can hear, listen and feel, but not see anymore. My aunt from my father’s side who showed me the family home and told me that my mum and dad lived almost next to each other. To be honest, I just don’t know a lot of my family history. I am trying to ask more. I am trying to learn Behasa Indonesia, just to be more close to my ancestral ground. To be close to my family and you hear me struggle in Behasa Indonesia, but this is everything what I want now. My uncle asked me “do you feel at home here?” Yes, I am. I am walking on soil that is made by nature and human influence which can be slippery or safe to walk on. Yes, I am. For the first time I feel at home in a country that I was not born in, but definitely at home. Welcome home or selamat datang di rumah. Thank you to all of those who made this small trip at the start of the new (birth) year possible

For three months, @prisroos worked live in the Rembrandt Open Studio to build a ‘home’ in the museum. For this project, Pris Roos visited several people at home and asked: ‘What does ‘home’ mean to you?’. Based on these conversations and her impressions, she created an interior. Her material, cardboard, is no coincidence: it originated from her parents’ shop. This cardboard held items from all over the world, brought to the Netherlands. Items often purchased by people with different cultural backgrounds, looking for something that reminds them of home. The artwork is now complete!
