This Saturday May 9 from 5-8 PM: The Systolic Commons opens alongside SMASH! (a piñata exhibition) at Prism Art Space.
The Systolic Commons is an interactive installation that produces water drops from participant heartbeats. Each heartbeat of up to 20 participants adds in creating a shared rain on tin roofs.
We see it as a way to make special and decorate the life force that we may attend to as individuals but rarely get to share and marvel at together.
The work is collaboration between Michael LaHood and Ben Levitt. Prism Art Space is located at 2120 K St, Sacramento, CA.
¡SMASH! 🪅 Prism Art Space’s next exhibition for May 2026 (May 9th thru May 30th) showcases the craftsmanship and art of piñata making through the work of Sacramento and Bay Area artists! Curated by Bridgett Rex @sunqueenxiv and Vianne De Santiago @lonelysink

A view from above in the Void. Things are happening!!! The installation is starting to take shape.
The Systolic Commons is a community driven installation, where participants heartbeats make a rain on these little tin roofs. In ways, we’re decorating what already exists, but is not always acknowledged. We hope you spend good time chilling with friends new and old in this space.
The Systolic Commons opens on Saturday May 9 at Prism Art Space, 2120 K st in Sacramento. It opens alongside SMASH! a piñata exhibition (it has been so fun to see that installation grow as well!) Opening reception from 5-8 PM, can’t wait to see you there!
What a fantastic evening, thank you to Dr. S.R. Coutts and Kevin Zupancic for their performance of John Cage's HPSCHD with live visuals at Prism Art Space. Thank you as well to everyone who came out and joined for the two performances! It was an absolute blast.
TONIGHT at Prism, one night only! Dr. S.R. Coutts performs John Cage's HPSCHRD on vinyl, and Kevin Zupancic performs live visuals accompanying the piece.
We've got an artist talk, 7 projectors around the space (and growing), and an immersive audiovisual event you won't forget.

🌀STILL POSSIBLE🌀 Last weekend to visit: thrus/friday 2-6pm, Sat 10-2p
Artist Collective spotlight: Worm School ( b. 2021) is an artist collective and reading group. Worms currently writhing in the compost pile are Ako Castuera @akocastuera , Ako Ibekwe @akostaco , Iso Marcus @__isoisoiso__ , Rosie Brand @rosiebrand , and Zena Segre @zsegre
Donna Haraway’s Staying With the Trouble was a formative text for worm school, helping shape their practice as ‘earthworm symbionts’. Embracing Donna Haraway’s claim ‘thinking is a materialist practice with other thinkers’. Worm School facilitates reading discussions alongside material exercises for thinking hands. These conversations reflect shared interests in craft practices and their entanglements with local ecologies, material relationships with place, alternate futures, and reimagined pasts.
Past discussions have been held online and at community spaces including Pitzer College and The Infinite School.
Their piece ( depicted above) 'String Figure, Noded' is a transitional point in the popular ‘Cat’s Cradle’ string figure game. String figures represent a model of collective thinking and storytelling that is in a constant state of transformation and change.
Worm school’s noded network casts lines tracing the conversations and exchanges between members of worm school.Past discussion participants contributed small sculptural nodes which add points of complication, connection, and 'trouble' along our shared fibrous loop.
The reading nook features research texts from worm school’s library, and a compost-dyed worm, the viewer is invited to sit and digest with worm school.
