It's official - The bubble has been burst - the veil has been removed - the cloak has been removed - The phrase"Black Music doesn't sell" can no longer be thrown at us anymore - officially. According to the Black Music Means Business Report - we are involved in a sector that not only put the "Cool" In the Britannia at the Queen's Jubilee some moons ago, but is reportedly worth 24.5 Billion Pounds to the British economy. Representing 80% of Britain's Music economy over the last 30 years. That's just the headline - am now gonna study the report and come back to you - in the meantime here's a few memories from the launch at the House of Commons as hosted by @dawnbutlerbrent . To say I am quite chuffed right now would be an understatement. I never get nominated for anything much less win. In my almost 40 year career I had only ever received one (1) award before I got the email from the office of @bell_ribeiroaddy MP - even then I didn't read the email properly 'cos I thought I was just being invited to celebrate Ghana Independence at the House Of Parliament - (that juxtaposition is a whooooole 'nother story).
My only award prior to this point was a trophy that my now wife, Izzie, presented me with in commemoration of the 5th Anniversary of the Ragazine - The Weekly Reggae Column I wrote for The Voice Newspaper. Honestly, I didn't imbue it with the spirit that it was given - a bit like when every Mum always thinks her child is the best looking one in the picture - I received it as "you're just saying that". I now know different - and am eternally grateful to her.
In short - "I" do the recognising, the highlighting, the celebrating, the awarding the championing - sadly, working behind the scenes - these things oft go unnoticed and/or unsung. This is why my sense of justice birthed the Cornerstone and Grammy Certificate Awards (ably assisted by Izzie). I know how the singers and players of instruments feel. We are for want of a better phrase 'Also Rans' in the creation of greatness.
So today, being recognised amongst many captains of industries whatever the field, who share the dual British and Ghanaian heritage is a big deal. It's made me proud and humble in equal measure and I very much appreci-love it. So thank you to everyone who's been a part of the journey thus far, especially my Reggae family as well as my GH/UK family.
Apparently it's i-fficial now - I am a @ukblackstars . That is 1 of 100 influential British Ghanaians.
