New headshot, who dis? 📸NBD because this isn’t professionally done and was totally a selfie in the mirror at the beach, but the wise @cnadame felt the beach vibes all the way down in TX and helped me pick this image for a new headshot. 🎓 I have some exciting shows and conference presentation(s?) coming up this year, and I was also just awarded the title of Full Professor. Feels weird, honestly! Mostly because my self loathing ass has to admit I accomplished something. 😬 Which is better, the black and white or color version❓
I’m on a hiatus from my Sub-par-stack publishing due to an incredible amount of life stuff on my plate, now topped with grief for the loss of my dad. I know you’re probably like, “Hannah it’s fine that you haven’t been posting.” And I know. I guess I just wanted to tell you a bit about why because I haven’t felt like talking about it. It’s hard to do anything. Tho there is a lot to be done. ✏️ I am still making work. I never stop that. I honestly don’t know how to *do* life without my sketchbooks. ⛈️ This is a diary comic about my morning so far. I’ve been reading some interesting articles about Imagery Rehersal Therapy for trauma-induced nightmares using the mechanism of comics (Art Therapy) for healing. Basically the effectiveness of the path I—and many of my friends at @comicsworkshop —are on. ✍️ If you can, draw something today.
Greetings everyone!
NOT Approved by the Comics Code Authority is on hiatus as we move into the summer. This gives me some time to work on the next iteration of this project, a group exhibition! More details coming soon!
I’m proud to say that NOT Approved interview series started in 2024 and has 20 published interviews. This seems like a good time to take a break and consider what the future holds.
In the meantime, have you read all 20 interviews?
Go to the “NOT Approved by the Comics Code Authority...” to read all 20 interviews.

This interview series is intended to provide conversational answers to a set of questions focusing on comics and how artists use the style and format in their work. While some interviews may feature comics creators, this interview series will also feature artists whose work is directly or indirectly influences by comics.
Thank you everyone for your interest in this project and in these artists!

My publishing schedule is much delayed as I am working on a print version of Bat Shit! to be published in a magazine I very much admire later this year! ✏️ My deadline is in a little over two weeks. And in 3 weeks, I’ll be unemployed. Yay! (Said both facetiously and genuinely) So I’ll have more mental time on my hands, at least, and hope to invest more time in my writing.
Preparations for my Figure Drawing for Comics class I am teaching for 4 weeks starting this Saturday through S.A.W. @comicsworkshop ✏️ I’m excited to share what I’ve learned in my nearly 20 years of teaching representational figure drawing, pairing it with strategies for discovering your own unique style of expression for comic making. The time and effect of detailed realism is a beautiful thing, but it doesn’t serve every story. 📓 I’m eager to see what kinds of specific things my students are excited to learn and what they feel nervous about when drawing figures so we can direct the class even more towards their needs. 🪧 Missed the signup this time? This class filled up, which is so exciting! I hope to offer this course again soon, so stay tuned.
Various stages of a woodcut I made around 10 years ago. I draw on large sheets of wood using a brush, gesso and charcoal mixed with a bit of water as well as stick compressed charcoal. I print my woodblocks in black ink on various colors of old bedsheets, cut them up, and appliqué stitch them together. This one had some iron burns as a nod to Willie Cole.
Creating while parenting, that’s something we know a lot about. It’s such a challenge, yet for me I am going to be making things no matter what. This text is Blake’s component to the first collaboration we made in our body of #freeform crochet work. Unsure what the future of our art career looks like since we are both getting out of higher education, but we plan to keep making. We are down to teach online or in person workshops, so teaching will remain a part of our lives even without the institution.
If nothing else, my work comes from a place of honesty. Where I am at in any given moment. The often shows what I am struggling with, but the joy can be woven in there, too. 🧶 This was the first crochet and appliqué collaboration Blake and I made @orangebarrelindustries
Rye passed the test tonight for completion of the Advanced Canine Class, led by @inthenameofk9_trainingacademy It’s easy to worry about all the things we still need to work on, but I can also see he has come a long way. Training is forever!
