“It’s a monument to the courage of people coming from Cuba, and of immigrants everywhere,” says Wright, whose family emigrated from Cuba to the United States in 1959.

Miami Herald photographer Pedro Portal has been nominated to the prestigious Beca Cintas 2025 for his project “Rostros de la isla dispersa.” Beca Cintas is one of the most important recognitions for Cuban artists living around the world. The winners will be announced this Jan. 22 at a ceremony at the Knight Center for Music Innovation of the Universidad de Miami in Coral Gables.
The Beca Cintas is funded by an endowment from businessman and arts patron Oscar B. Cintas (1887–1957), who also served as Cuba’s ambassador to the United States from 1932 to 1934.
This year the fellowship awards $25,000 to winners in Architecture and Design, Creative Writing, Musical Composition, Visual Arts, and Photography, in which Portal is joined as a nominee by Yaritza Guirado Alejo, Ania Moussawel, Luis Quintanal, Lissette Schaeffler and Ricardo Zulueta.

El único requisito es ser cubano, me dijo Pedro Portal sobre su proyecto fotográfico Rostros de la isla dispersa, ahora nominado a la Beca Cintas. Hemos estado hablando de esos retratos por mucho tiempo, pero es ahora que noto un detalle que me llama la atención. Son rostros serenos, comparten una placidez que contrasta con lo activo que es Portal. Interesante como esos hombres y mujeres de la cultura cubana se entregan con este relax ante el lente inquieto de Portal. La conexion entre ellos y Portal es real. En blanco y negro tenía que ser porque es un homenaje a la fotografía tradicional en un momento que pronto se impondría la digital. Pedro comenzó a tirar fotos en Cuba con una camara soviética Zenit, pero estos retratos son con la Hasselblad. Es parte de ese viaje que cada uno puede hacer personal. Pedro y yo éramos prácticamente vecinos en Cuba: el creció en Tarara y yo en Celimar, el vecindario que quedó incompleto junto a la playa de Bacuranao porque llego Castro y mando a parar. Yo conocí al fotógrafo en Miami y es un honor llamarlo mi amigo porque es una de las mejores personas que tiene esta ciudad, servicial al máximo. No hay nada que le pidas que no se desviva por conseguirlo. Pero por qué el vínculo, además de nuestra Taina, una gran amiga para mi. Pues porque crecimos en esos barrios bellos de salitre y añoranza donde las casas de los años 1950 se habían quedado vacías. Miami tenía ese allure de la fiesta perenne para nosotros. Noches de trova con visita de Facundo Cabral y el autor de La Negra Tomasa. Los dos hemos tenido la suerte de conocer a tantas leyendas cubanas. El único requisito. If you live in #Miami, you are probably familiar with #Cuban cuisine. Most likely you’ve had it dozens, hundreds, maybe even thousands of times, depending on your age and your affinity for lechón. But chances are you have not had anything quite like what you’ll find at Tin Tin. The new restaurant on Eighth Street in Miami, which opened at the end of December in the former space of Social 27, does not claim to be a Cuban restaurant. The creation of co-owners and chefs Sachi Statz and Victor Santos, veterans of the Michelin Bib Gourmand breakfast-and-lunch restaurant @tintaycafe y Cafe, Tin Tin revels in the blending of Cuban flavors and Italian cuisine, sometimes with a stroke of French influence.
