I was asked last minute to switch from VJing for
@invasian.atl to setting up an interactive installation. Because of the time and spatial constraints, I put together this modular and simple setup pretty quickly.
Setting up for a warehouse party is always interesting, because most people attending are not expecting to be engaged by much beyond the music. But to me, art installations in nightlife spaces are essential. They help maintain energy between acts, give guests space to move around and immerse themselves in the environment, and create more layers for people to interact with throughout the night. It is the kind of thing that gets people to stay longer, talk about how unique the experience was afterward, and feel excited for the next one.
For this setup, I wanted something user friendly within a dynamic environment where people likely would not be in the clearest headspace. So using Kinect and #TouchDesigner, I put together interactive particles, edge detection, and a paint with your hand piece. The projects cycled every 30 seconds or so, giving people the chance to try different interactions in a short amount of time as they passed by.
I’m excited to keep refining this aesthetically, both in the UI and in the installation itself. If you’d like something similar, or something even more tailored for your next event, hit us up. We’d be happy to chat.
