@_lukemart_ Shewwww, hey world! I could not be happier to share that I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a pair of posters for DFB! That’s David F*cking Byrne!!!
This project was a three-way Charm City Collaboration made in heaven—David (who grew up just outside Baltimore), myself, and the legendary Globe Collection and Press at MICA. Globe has been producing event posters since the 1940’s, for the likes of James Brown to Jimi Hendrix to Pink Floyd and hundreds of others. I’ve even got some posters that they printed for my hometown’s carnival from the early 2000’s! Even if you’re not familiar with Globe’s name, surely you’re familiar with their iconic style—the bold wood type and dayglo colors are unmistakable.
Keeping true to how the Globe artisans have crafted their posters for decades, I went full analog for this entire process. The clouds and face were drawn to-scale of the finished poster, then the screenprinted layers were hand-cut out of Rubylith stencil (check out that hand-cut Cooper Black text 😎). I screenprinted the first two layers in-house at Globe’s facilities, and then the prints were run through a Vandercook letterpress and printed with that beautifully aged wood type. I haven’t printed a gig poster this major in years, it felt great to get behind the press again.
Thank you to Allison at Globe for assisting with the printing and all the help throughout the process—my hero!!! Thank you to my best bud Adam for going through rounds of revisions with me as I kept trying (and failing) to get the cloudy facial features right. Thank you to Matthew and the team at Red Star for sending this project my way, and thank you to DB for being such a wellspring of inspiration and happiness.
APs on sale Tuesday at noon EST, got some really pretty Stardream foils to go along with these. Thanks for looking, thanks for reading, and I will see ya soon!
