After a 4 year hiatus I am excited to share a new album cover I created for The Black Keys. This album is very special to me and it feels really good to be back working with my friends on something I love deeply. The cover features a photograph from living legend William Eggleston and the sessions were some of the emotionally charged recordings the band has ever made. I am very excited for everyone to see this work and more importantly hear these new songs. I am working as creative director on this album / campaign / tour / merch and this is just the beginning of the work that will becoming out this year. We have assembled an insane creative team to support this album and tour and I am very excited to share what we have been building. Thank you Dan and Pat and the whole team for making this record and making this whole thing happen. On a personal note, 7 years ago today I was laying in an ICU bed recovering from a massive stroke and emergency brain surgery. To say that I am lucky to be here and to be doing this is a massive understatement. This wouldn’t be happening without the love and support of my incredible wife who carried me while I attempted to pick up the pieces. If you’re wondering why I have been gone, that is a big part of it. Weirdly it is also why I am back.

Recently

I have a ton of new work coming out this weekend from my team at @redstarmerch I rarely share our work but I wanted to make sure these lines end up on everyone’s moodboard next year so I am posting each design on its own slide. @allthingsgo this is our first time designing the merch for all things go and I am incredibly excited about how it came out. Some genuinely out of control back hits and really great @kel.lauren designs… there are a few other things in the line but I am just highlighting my team and our external collaborators contributions. This is the fourth year I have worked on pilgrimage and at this point it feels like we are just executing what we built a couple years ago. Tho this year we have a limited edition art print from @chriscolemanart and a @deansnuts poster (took me 4 years Jeremy, but we did it) I think the merch for both festivals came out really great and I wanted to share the lines together to highlight the aesthetic range of our team, along with our external contributors, have refined since we started building the new design team at red star. I also wanted to share some credit to the people who helped make this work happen. Just shy of twenty years ago I designed this shirt for the black keys. I had a full time job designing graphics for a midwestern retail fashion brand and most of my time was spent researching vintage American tshirts. This shirt was inspired by all the vintage shirts I would see researching, this was specifically inspired by vintage motorcycle shirts and vintage hand painted or appliquéd biker vests. I think I still have the moodboard, j will find it and post it. For the nerds out there, the typeface is one of the earliest forms of what we now call sans serif. Technically it is a wood type font. I designed this shirt using a scan of a book of typefaces by Dan X. Solo I rounded the corners a bit and hand laid it out. I saw last week that the band has resurrected this design in a new simplified form to use as their main logo. There are a few alternate layouts in the same style as well for a nice flexible brand identity.
