And Modernists know how to do the Northern Soul moves to this kinda music 😄 Both compilations are not particularly rare, but hey don’t they look mighty cool? All recordings on these albums are the original mono takes of songs released as 45rpm singles between April 1963 and May 1966. The golden Holland-Dozier-Holland era in fact. Twisted Teens ⛓️ Fronted by singer Caspian Hollywell, Twisted Teens, out of New Orleans, plays a cracked, county-tinged garagerock, crusted in fuzz and zinging with frantic slides. Hollywell has a voice like a cat’s tongue, raspy but soft; a bit like the rough-edged blues-i-ness voice of Greg Cartwright (Reigning Sound, The Oblivians 😍). Together with Razor Ramon Santos (@ramones.turpentine ) on steel (!) guitar the @twistedteensneworleans duo channels American country for a raw, righteous and original sound! ‘Blame The Clown’ is their second album. It’s cool. It’s great! (The orange one in the pic is last year’s debut). This album might be hard to get here in Europe, but I do know the @waaghalsnl recordshop in my hometwon of Arnhem has a copy in the bins! Get it or regret it! My version on recycled eco friendly vinyl is on Jazz Life Records (@jazzlifeforever UK, 2026). Samplers for poor collectors 😎 No one can find (and afford, haha) the original 7-inches by the ‘one hit wonders’ collected on ‘Bloodstains Across Australia’. So you better try to find this ‘unofficial’ compilation instead; it’s totally in the vein of the ‘Where Birdmen Flew’ sampler or the first few ‘Killed By Death’ samplers. Scored it at the international record fair in Den Bosch 🇾🇪 the other day. And very convenient too; one doesn’t need to get out of it’s chair to flip/change the 7-inches every two minutes, haha. This kinda punkrock is a style by itself now: KBD punk! For those of you who only want one compilation of snotty, obnoxious punkrock, get the ‘Feel Lucky, Punk?’ album. It’s a must have! Any other ‘Bloodstains Across’ recommendations? Dubwise 🎶💥 Yep I’m pretty much into garagepunk, noiserock and postpunk as you all know, but I’m an avid dubreggae fan as well. And Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry is one of my musical heroes! And if you thought that pretty much everything by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry had already been released, you’re in for a surprise! Not so long ago, these four 10-inch records saw the light of day; unreleased mixes and dub versions from the golden age of The Black Ark studio. Frisian Punk! Forty years after their debut album ‘WIL MET U NEUKEN’ (= ‘wanna f*ck you’), the Frisian-language, art-punk legend ‘It Dockumer Lokaeltsje’ releases ‘Loop of Sloop’, a record in the vein of their early days. It’s a beautiful gatefold 12” vinyl 45 rpm version and it comes with a free CD. 200 copies only, so you’d better be fast! It Dockumer Lokaeltsje (I’m a big fan 😍) sounds as urgent and funny (!) as ever and the musical vibes of Shellac, DNA, Teenage Jesus and The Ex are all over the place. Post Punky stuff! Not so long ago I came across Fred Deakin’s insta, @freddeak.in . On a regular basis DJ Fred pulls out three ‘hits’ (7”, 12” or album tracks) from his huge record collection and spins them live for us. Super! And man, how cool his choices are; especially when it comes to the alt-indie bangers and the old skool post-punky-funky stuff. The Pop Group, Medium Medium, The Contortions, The Rezillos, Stiff Little Fingers, Swell Maps, Family Fodder, Die Krupps, 23 Skidoo, Cabaret Voltaire, Jah Wobble…. sooo good. I like that kinda UK post punk from the late 70s, you know that. Essential, original music that belongs in every post-punk collection, I think! It becomes really interesting to me when the totally unknown and the obscure are shown and played; Kap Bambino (great name! Totally bonkers electropunk), The Drowning Craze and The Diagram Brothers for example…. Anyone? Haha! Immediately on my wantlist (thx Fred, those were completely new to me!): - The Drowning Craze - ‘Storage Case’ 7” - Gerry and The Holograms 7” - Nicky and the Dots- ‘Never been so stuck’, 7-inch on Small Wonder 😍 records. I pulled out: 1) A Certain Ratio - Do The Du 12” (‘Shack Up’ on the flip). 2) Scars - Adultery / Horror Show 7” on Fast Product and last but not least, 3) The Diagram Brothers with ‘We Are All Animals’. Double Sick! ☠️ Last friday I saw Sick Shooters (young garage punk ‘n’ rollers without a bass player from Utrecht 🇾🇪 @sickshootersrock ) and @sickthoughtss (hell yeah 🔥🔥🔥) tearing the @slachthuishaarlem audience to pieces! And man, believe me, it was really impossible not (!) to bop your head, shake your fist, move your feet and bounce around to that ‘revved up Status Quo / Motörhead / Ramones / Spits sound’ of Sick Thoughts! Straight up garage punkrock ‘n’ roll live on stage, that’s what we want. What a sick night it was! The Sick Shooters album is on @wapshoowaprecords (cool R&R label from Amsterdam) and you’d better get it fast, cuz there are only 300 copies pressed I heard (@slachthuisstudios ). It’s great; eleven mighty fine ‘n’ catchy rippers in the vein of The Marked Men, The Carbonas, The Cavemen and Gino and the Goons. ‘This is R ‘n’ Roll’, The Kids taught us! The Sick Thoughts 5-song EP ‘Another Piece Of Plastic’ is a welcome rerelease on @slovenlyrecordings . It’s a blast! Shout along with L7. And hey, one of my teeth is missing, haha. Cool as ice cover pic 📸 @l7theband The Rezillos - ‘I can’t stand my baby’. This 7-inch version is way punchier than the album version btw. Great punkish powerpop (Faye Fife is the singer!) from Scotland! The Slits - Peel Sessions (45 rpm version). This is ‘pre Cut’ Slits music. Punky and rough and the reggae vibes (and the Dennis Bovell production) were not present in the mix yet.
