DECOLONISING OUR LOVE II: MEMENTOS OF LOVE continues! ♡♡ We wanted to keep exploring memory as both a language and a practice of love within diasporic experiences, this time through moving images and sound. So we are excited to share @salmendermagazine second programme at @referencepoint180 . An intimate evening of screening and performance featuring films by Nicolas Babin @nicolaslouisbabin , Jazmin Garcia @buffalotearz Olukemi Lijadu @kemkemlij , and a live musical performance by @wordsofazia . @place.ltd × @salomon × @knightclubchess needed a trophy for their chess tournament. Oh, and “you have less than a week.” No pressure... Started with a blank sketchbook and a brief that said: make something the winner never moves from their shelf. Not a plaque. Not a cup. An object. Something that holds the weight of three very different worlds ~ mountain terrain, third-space culture, and the quiet intensity of chess. Two concepts. One week. Sketch to 3D to physical object in someone’s hands on the night. RIDGE: The Knight emerging from a mountain range built on the body of a Pawn. Where you start. What you climb through. Who you become. WHISPER LOUDER: A Pawn-shaped speaker cone ~ round head, narrow neck, flared base. An opening at the top. A vessel that takes a whisper and makes the whole room feel it. Because the Pawn is the piece nobody worries about. Until it reaches the other side. They went with Whisper Louder. 3D printed. In red. Place × Salomon branding de-bossed from the body. Watching someone hold it on tournament day and actually feel it ~ that’s the thing. That’s why I do this. Every project starts the same way. A problem. A blank page. A decision to take it seriously. The sketch always looks rough. The idea always sounds bigger than you can deliver. The timeline is always tighter than it should be. You do it anyway. That’s the whole game. If you’re planning an event, a tournament, a moment ~ and you want the objects in the room to actually mean something, let’s talk. This is exactly the kind of work I want more of.

We’re noticing a shift. Learning is leaving the building- literally. More and more, the most interesting education isn’t happening in lecture halls or behind tuition fees. It’s happening in converted spaces, collectives, and communities built by people who decided the barriers to entry were a design flaw, not a feature. A Center for Research was born from this exact understanding. Co-founded by Ana Nicolaescu and Sebastian Tiew, it exists as something outside of a single institution — it’s a practice sitting between architecture and media, a publishing and design research project, a curation platform, and a residency programme all at once. More importantly, it’s a deliberate experiment in what research can look and feel like when it’s freed from academic frameworks entirely. The result? A growing programme of events supported by @aavisiting_school that are open, curious, and happening all week long.
