"Whittier Birthplace has begun restoring its early 19th century barn for use as a gathering place and destination for field trips, art shows and musical and theatrical performances.
"The barn at 305 Whittier Road, off Route 110, in Haverhill is across the street from the childhood home of famed poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier. It was recently a set location for the independent film โShemaโ that premiered last fall.
โThe barn sits in the middle of the East Haverhill Trails Network and is a landmark within the City of Haverhillโs planned โWhittierlandโ trail improvements. This barn is an important part of the visitor experience to the Whittier Birthplace and to East Haverhill in general. These repairs will enable the Whittier Birthplace to expand the use of this historic structure for the benefit of the Greater Haverhill community,โ said Executive Director Kaleigh Parรฉ Shaughnessy.
"Work involves repairs to clapboards, windows, doors, roof, lighting, stairs and railings, as well as complete exterior painting. Much of the estimated more than $50,000 project cost is being covered by the generosity of members of the Cogswell Club. The Trustees of the John Greenleaf Whittier Homestead are seeking additional support from the community."
Thanks to the Cogswell Club donors!
