Lucky’s Shot, 2024, sculpted glass, wood, felt, by Julia and Robin Rogers. Based on Dog’s Playing Pool 2, by Cassius Marcellus Coleridge, 1894, is a very significant piece for us that we focused on making for nine months. There’s both an irony and a sincerity to the piece for us. We view artworks such as this as secular versions of old masters paintings; depicting drama and characters without biblical ties. The dogs playing pool is a ubiquitous image and very relatable. It is a meme ingrained in the collective psyche of people who lived during a certain time period. Julia in fact grew up with a tapestry of it, hung by her father, in her shared childhood bedroom. This painting comes from a series of paintings that was commissioned by an advertising firm and was originally used as calendar art. The irony for us is applying highly refined glass sculpting skills, which we have each spent decades developing, to a subject that may be considered low brow. The pursuit of details and character development, down to every minutia, was a driving goal during the creation process. The same irony was evident in the skilled hand of the original painter. We incorporated new techniques, such as glass mosaic, and developed a construction method so that each individual piece is held firmly in place for display, but is easily removed for transport.
