The exhibition brings together Mekas’s rarely exhibited “Frozen Frames” — photographic stills drawn from his 16mm films — alongside a continuous screening of his final epic film As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty.

Selections from Art House and Temporal Distortions (2013) continue to reflect Matney Gallery’s long-standing interest in artists working across psychological space, experimental image-making, memory, and contemporary figuration. The exhibition brought together painters, photographers, and interdisciplinary artists whose practices explored altered perception, layered narratives, symbolic imagery, and shifting relationships between time and identity.
The project helped establish early dialogues between Southern experimental culture, contemporary painting, photography, and internationally engaged practices that continue to shape the gallery’s curatorial direction today.

Friday night (May 15, 2026) Studio Two Three (109 W 15th St, Richmond) hosted a community-powered benefit show for the Passages: Artists in Solidarity with Immigrants, Refugees & Asylum Seekers album. The grassroots event featured local bands, a pop-up Pizzini Show Print exhibit and raised funds for Sacred Heart Center, American Gateways and Casa Marianella through live music and solidarity.

At the recent screening of works by Jonas Mekas at the Kimball Theatre during the Ampersand International Arts Festival, art historian Charles Palermo and curator/photographer Lee Matney joined audiences in reflecting on Mekas’s lasting influence on experimental cinema, memory, and diaristic image-making.
Palermo, Professor of Art History at William & Mary, is known for his scholarship on photography, modernism, film, and theories of visual interpretation. His work has explored the relationship between moving image, contemporary art, and perception, making his participation especially meaningful within the context of Mekas’s deeply personal cinematic language.
The evening also reflected the collaborative spirit surrounding the broader Mekas project, with Darren Floyd of Film Studies contributing to the program and Patrick Harkin serving as co-curator alongside Lee Matney on the exhibition and screening initiatives connected to Still Beautiful in My Memory.
The program formed part of the larger exhibition Still Beautiful in My Memory, bringing Mekas’s “Frozen Frames” into dialogue with continuous film screenings and contemporary discussions around memory, displacement, community, and experimental film culture.
