Selections from Art House and Temporal Distortions (2013) continue to reflect Matney Gallery’s long-standing interest in artists working across psychological space, experimental image-making, memory, and contemporary figuration. The exhibition brought together painters, photographers, and interdisciplinary artists whose practices explored altered perception, layered narratives, symbolic imagery, and shifting relationships between time and identity. The project helped establish early dialogues between Southern experimental culture, contemporary painting, photography, and internationally engaged practices that continue to shape the gallery’s curatorial direction today. #ArtHouse #TemporalDistortions #MatneyGallery #ContemporaryArt #2013Exhibition #ExperimentalArt #ContemporaryPainting #Photography #SouthernArt #VisualCulture #PsychologicalSpace #Figuration #CuratorialPractice #ContemporaryArtists #ArtHistory #GalleryArchive #CulturalDialogue #JohnLeeMatney

At the recent screening of works by Jonas Mekas at the Kimball Theatre during the Ampersand International Arts Festival, art historian Charles Palermo and curator/photographer Lee Matney joined audiences in reflecting on Mekas’s lasting influence on experimental cinema, memory, and diaristic image-making. Palermo, Professor of Art History at William & Mary, is known for his scholarship on photography, modernism, film, and theories of visual interpretation. His work has explored the relationship between moving image, contemporary art, and perception, making his participation especially meaningful within the context of Mekas’s deeply personal cinematic language. The evening also reflected the collaborative spirit surrounding the broader Mekas project, with Darren Floyd of Film Studies contributing to the program and Patrick Harkin serving as co-curator alongside Lee Matney on the exhibition and screening initiatives connected to Still Beautiful in My Memory. The program formed part of the larger exhibition Still Beautiful in My Memory, bringing Mekas’s “Frozen Frames” into dialogue with continuous film screenings and contemporary discussions around memory, displacement, community, and experimental film culture. #JonasMekas #CharlesPalermo #LeeMatney #PatrickHarkin #DarrenFloyd #AmpersandArtsFestival #ExperimentalFilm #AvantGardeCinema #FilmStudies #ContemporaryArt #WilliamsburgVA #KimballTheatre #StillBeautifulInMyMemory #IndependentCinema #ArtAndFilm

Revisiting Solitary Confinement by Lloyd Toone from William & Mary Collects III at the Muscarelle Museum of Art — an exhibition centered around collectors and works connected to the William & Mary community. Matney Gallery was honored to facilitate the loan of this important work, which continues to resonate through its material presence, history, and emotional intensity. #LloydToone #WilliamAndMaryCollectsIII #MuscarelleMuseum #MatneyGallery #ContemporaryArt AfricanAmericanArt MuseumExhibition WilliamsburgVA

The work of Barclay Sheaks occupies a distinct position within postwar American painting, particularly in the Mid-Atlantic region, where his pioneering involvement and sustained engagement with acrylic paints and his focus on perceptual stillness distinguish his practice from both academic realism and more overtly expressive modes of the period.#matneygallery #williamsburgva #artmuseums #artgallery #artcollector

Mia Guile’s paintings balance intuition, color, and emotional abstraction in a way that feels deeply personal while remaining open to the viewer. Her recent work at BudmanStudio in Palm Springs continues the momentum of a practice that has expanded through museum collaborations, public art, and large-scale abstract painting. Exciting to see her work evolving in this context. #MiaGuile #AbstractPainting #ContemporaryArt #BudmanStudio #PalmSpringsArt #VirginiaArtist #AbstractArt #WomenArtists #Painting #ContemporaryPainting
