SHOW (AND LIFE CHANGE) ANNOUNCEMENT!
My dear friend Walt McClements is bringing his gorgeous sounds to the DMV, playing a set at Tonal Park on Fri May 15 with the incomparable Sarah Hughes opening, so thrilled to get these two angels in the same room!
This will be a farewell party of sorts as I am leaving Tonal Park as a full-time staff engineer and have joined the crew at Smithsonian Folkways Recordings in downtown DC, doing production, mastering and restoration work for the label full time.
Come hang and celebrate!
It's out!! So grateful to get to spend some lovely days making music with this fine crew! Head over to Bandcamp or Dischord's site to grab a copy, and hope to see you at the Black Cat tomorrow night for the release party!
sometimes you have an interview scheduled during a particularly charged week in America, and it feels fortunate that that interview is with a band that has long confronted that country's political standing in the world.
such is the case with episode 1024 of the Kreative Kontrol Yeah, Right podcast because Hugh McElroy and Mike Kanin from Black Eyes have returned to discuss their first new album in 20 years, 'Hostile Design,' the state of American socio-political discourse, the inspiring resistance that D.C. residents have exhibited as the federal government has sent military personnel and ICE agents into the area, American history and foreign policy and where power truly lies, songwriting themes and topics explored by Black Eyes, working with Ian MacKaye as a producer, tour dates, other future plans, and much more.
it was nice to reconnect with Hugh and Mike, who are very thoughtful and talented people. please listen to 'Hostile Design' by Black Eyes when it's released on October 10, and hear our Kreative Kontrol conversation today, on a podcast player near you. thanks!

Happy Birthday to me and Big News! Revealed yesterday, I’m announcing the release of my new album, Psychic/Body Sound System on Relative Pitch Records on November 29th! It is my first album under my own name in many years and my first ever album totally solo!
Though this album is fully improvised, I mean for it to be felt as a story, or maybe even as the setting for creating stories, like the rules of a table top role playing game. As I assembled them into the album, I began hearing these 11 tracks as a journey, almost like a altered-dimensional day’s work clocking and clocking out, into, through, and out of a fantastical, impossible space. Or maybe it struck me like a pilgrimage where one enters a place that’s simultaneaously in our world, but also sublimely separate from it, experiencing something transformational while in there, but upon leaving is left with mostly the echoes of being “elsewhere.” That’s where I hope this album will take you someplace similar on one or many listens.
Even though I’m the only person you hear on this album, creating this whole presentation with the music, art, words, took a cohort of brilliant collaborators. Surrounding the music is the absolutely stunning artwork by queer, fat-centric artist James Dillenbeck, and enveloping words by revolutionary writer/artist/musician Alex Smith (who also came up with the great title!). Seriously. I mean, look at that cover! And wait until you read Alex’s words for each track.
Also fundamental to the sound was the expertise and thoughtfulness of Don Godwin, who engineered, mixed, and mastered the record. He took my circular breathed sub-bass drones, my free jazz declamations and all the other sounds I made and helped transform them into sonic geography and architecture.
So get excited! Huge thanks to Kevin Reilly for his patient support! Please pre-save this on your streaming services (link in bio)! Preview and presale coming your way this Friday!!!
