Tanat Teeradakorn is currently in residence at CHERUBY. @pgm_991 Based in Thailand, his practice spans moving image, sound, performance, and installation. Drawing on the display format of merchandising, he examines how cultural tourism, historical narratives, and national identity are constructed, packaged, and circulated. In The Rise and Fall of Absolutism and its related exhibition project National Opera Complex (2025), music from historical social movements and traditional dance in Thailand are reorchestrated and restructured in the form of an opera. Through the interplay of sound, movements of the body, and collage of archival images, the work addresses how power, ideology, and resistance are perceived and reproduced. Across his practice, political and cultural narratives are often staged in the guise of boldly designed and packaged forms, distributed through logics associated with entertainment. We warmly invite you to join an Open Studio on Saturday, March 21. Over the past month, Tanat has been conducting research in Shanghai, focusing on “red tourism” and examining how revolutionary histories are narrated repeatedly but with differences, and how they are embedded within the cityscapes and everyday experience. During the Open Studio, a selection of works in progress will be displayed. In 2026, CHERUBY is honored to welcome Tanat Teeradakorn(@pgm_991 ) as our 2026 artist-in-residence. Based in Thailand, Tanat’s practice critically dismantles cultural narratives and the mechanisms through which national identity is constructed, circulated, and consumed. Working across disciplines, he examines how visual and sound systems, branding strategies, and popular culture shape collective memory. His projects often unfold as fictional cultural complexes—complete with merchandise displays, sonic landscapes, and media fragments. A pivotal work in his trajectory is the 17-minute film The Rise and Fall of Absolutism and the related exhibition National Opera Complex (2025, Gasworks, London), which brought him wider recognition. Structured as a five-act opera inspired by songs central to Thailand’s activist history, the work uses music, movement, and image to investigate forms of resistance. Treating ideology as something that can be packaged and sold, he exposes how political meaning travels through the same channels as entertainment and commerce. His works operate “like an effective brand strategy,” extending beyond exhibition spaces into performances, products, and viral afterlives. Despite the rigor of his research, Tanat resists didactic closure. He privileges affect, rhythm, and sensory immersion, allowing sound—especially remixed protest music—to carry historical tension. Across his practice, trauma, nationalism, and spectacle remain suspended in productive ambiguity. CHERUBY invites Tanat because his practice embodies the field we seek to cultivate: a space where culture and commerce collide, where entertainment becomes a site of critique. His fluid approach to moving between spectacle and structural analysis aligns with our vision for interdisciplinary, in-situ research. Since September 2025, CHERUBY has initiated its artist residency program, dedicated to supporting site-responsive research and interdisciplinary artistic production. In 2026, CHERUBY welcomes Tanat Teeradakorn as the first resident artist of the year. During his two-month residency (February–April 2026), Tanat will develop new work while conducting research embedded within the city’s touristic landscape, critically engaging with the revolutionary histories that shape its urban fabric. CHERUBY is honored to support Tanat’s field-based inquiry and evolving artistic practice throughout his time in residence.
