At the end of 2019 we finished a film I’d been working on with
@arg___art and
@elizabethlaprelle for their project
@annaandelizabeth . The film was inspired by a recording of an old folk song sung by a woman, Margret, in her kitchen in 1941 that anna found in an archive in Vermont and the duo later arranged for their record with
@smithsonianfolkways .
The idea for the film was to reinterpret the essence of the dreams/wishes/prayers voiced in the song, and I tried my best to translate them into some sort of cinematic feeling. We had our own dreams to release it in 2020 as a series of live installations, but like many things in 2020, that never came to be. More pressing things took center stage, time passed, each of our individual lives changed greatly, and the film sat on a hard drive for years.
At the end of last year, anna and I were both independently organizing old hardrives and came upon the MOV file deep in a folder. After a phone call we decided it was right to put it up on the internet in its linear form. And now many months (years!) later I’m happy for this old friend to step out from its solitary existence on my hardrive and see the light of the web.
It’s being hosted on
@smithsonianfolkways YouTube, whose generous support helped bring this project to light.
This film was both the end and starting point for a new chapter in my creative journey, and while in someways watching it has the uncanny feeling of encountering a past self, I’m glad to see it have its day in the sun. Will share some more info on the film in the coming days!
