Mia is a character who is figuring out who she is through breaking the mold of traditional ballet, and ideally we want someone who identifies with that path. Think experimental dancers who grew up in ballet, or a dancer in a ballet company who is drawn to contemporary choreography. Peter has excellent taste in music and dance; this is not your traditional ballerina project (in the best way possible). TWO WAVES is also based partly around Lake Superior in the northwoods, which is a very special region to me, and Iâm grateful to be finally working on something close to home that can capture these spaces on camera in a style of storytelling that I respond to. I have a lot of other personal ties to this story (daughter trying to understand her dead father, ehem), so this one is dear to me.
I want to acknowledge that this is a deeply strange moment for me personally to be posting a casting call. My city is still under a federal occupation and thereâs so much violence every day. Though it often feels absurd to be working at this time Iâm also very lucky in that Iâm collaborating with very kind and understanding teams that are supportive of our struggle here in Minneapolis. I want to give a shoutout to Peter and Bre who have given me grace to get this going a little more slowly than I would normally like to. Peter has spent time living between Minneapolis and Madeline Island and has a lot of community here. So rather than a âfuck Capitalism and the fact that I have to work right nowâ vibe, Iâm actually experiencing a deep sense of kind hearted collaboration and solidarity in this work. Thatâs a huge privilege and Iâm extremely grateful! All to say, please get behind this team and spread the word about a beautiful project.

These screenings have been really special and imo the best way to take in this film that wasnât made for the internet viewing experience in its form and themes.
