Los Angeles friends, please come out tomorrow night for an opening of my first solo show in LA since 2018, Toward a Hyperreality. This show is the culmination of many years of work & a commitment to photography and the printed picture. The scale and physicality of the prints are meant to be experienced in person and I hope you get the chance to see them. from the press release: “Toward a Hyperreality is a body of work about urban space, its consequences, the shifting identity of the contemporary American city and what I see as the socio-spatial schism of the built environment.” for the full press release and more information see the link in bio

Please join us on Saturday, April 25 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm for the opening of: Seasons 09: Peter Baker “Toward a Hyperreality” “Toward a Hyperreality is a body of work about urban space, its consequences and the shifting identity of the contemporary American city. The work is an interplay between reality and fiction, posing questions about progress, technology, consumerism, socio-economic disparities and the human dramas that unfold in the contemporary social landscape. As a photographer of the twenty-first century, my work doesn’t aim merely to question the street as a democratic social space— it describes a landscape increasingly constructed to create the illusion of a shared reality, while perpetuating the erasure of the public realm.” for more information about the exhibition see the link in bio & hope to see you at the opening!

Gallery hours today, May 16 from 1:00-5:00 Peter Baker / Toward a Hyperreality “A common misconception about the theory of hyperreality is that it applies to conspicuously artificial places like Disneyland. We imagine that once we exit the spectacle, or put our devices back into our pockets, we re-enter the “real” world. But my practice stems from a feeling that the duplicity of the social landscape is hiding in plain sight— that architecture and facades act as emblems of power and ideology— concealing labor, history, and even violence. In my photographs hyperreality resembles a more subtle, poetic condition— where facts clearly described come under suspicion, qualities of light shape an unsettling beauty, and unfamiliar zones come to pass for the norm.”

Our beautiful, brilliant friend Katherine. I’ll always remember that we met on Thanksgiving in 2016, a good omen because my heart is full of gratitude for our friendship. A few months later, around the release of Lincoln In The Bardo, we formed a book club with a group of friends that would go on for many years. We’d meet every month or so and in that time we became like a loving, devoted, dysfunctional family— passionately delving into literature, politics, art, life. You would respond to my long-winded, stubborn takes with kindness, humor & usually a far more succinct & lucid contribution to the group. I was so proud & happy for you when you got into law school having scored in the 99th percentile on the LSAT, which you called “the most psycho thing that’s ever happened to me.” Lol. Of course, no one was surprised, we all knew you were a mastermind. Your youthful energy and perspective both challenged my own and gave me hope. One of my fondest memories was when you, Dominic and I went to see Bernie speak. A memory to remind me not to fall into despair, but to believe that somehow we may still achieve a better, more sane and fair society. I’d be remiss to not mention how hilarious you were. Reading our correspondences over the years has brought both smiles & tears—especially the sweet note you sent me when you found out I was going to be a dad. This has been really hard to process. Since I’ve learned of your passing I have been in state of shock, followed by confusion, anger & deep sadness. I wish I could have been there more for you recently Kat. I just can’t help but feel that this didn’t have to happen. This loss is a tragedy & not something to be romanticized. And I don’t buy into some of what I’ve seen from a more algorithmically boosted persona. The thought of you will inspire me to practice some of the lessons from the Bardo. To be aware that everyone labors under some burden of sorrow. That all are suffering and therefore we must do what we can to lighten the load of those we come into contact with. You were a bright light for everyone who knew you and we all love you and miss you dearly 💛

It is estimated that over 2 trillion pictures will be taken in 2026. How many of those will be documents of the full blown fascism playing out on American streets is anyone’s guess. But in honor of his birthday, here are 10 Atget pictures made in 1926, his last full year of working before his death the following year.

A dining moment from our Sag Harbor project, where the home’s 1890s roots inform a layered, quiet elegance. Woven rush, oak, and a Marina Simao painting create a dialogue between old and new, grounded by the soft geometry of exposed beams and natural light. . . photographer: @peterbaker42 interiordesign: @amldesignstudio . . . . . . . . . . #SagHarbor #SagHarborDesign #HamptonsArchitecture #marinaperezsimão #HamptonsHome #SagHarborStyle #SagHarborLiving #WarmMinimalism #MaterialDrivenDesign #CollectedInteriors #DesignWithSoul #ExposedBeams #BuiltInBeauty #AMLStudio #InteriorInspo #ResidentialArchitecture #DesignDaily #ArchDigestStyle
