I began photographing Treasure Island in 2018, drawn to its dissonance and uneasy beauty. These photographs reflect not only the island’s state of in-betweenness, but also the wider socioeconomics of the Bay Area and my own sense of standing at a crossroads.
The Middle Distance lingers in the space between here and there, between future and past, where the horizon is always visible, yet stubbornly out of reach. While the ache of distance persists, moments of connection and solidarity surface amid the uncertainty.
I'm happy to announce that my first book of photographs titled, APORIA, is now available to purchase via Dalpine!! I'm deeply proud of this work and thankful to everyone who provided guidance along the way. Please pick up a copy via the link in bio.
This first edition of 500 copies was made possible through the generous support of Fiebre Photobook, La Troupe, Artes Graficas Palermo, and Dalpine. Design help by the talented Aaron Bloom.
“The Middle Distance,” self-published by Andrew Waits (@andrewwaits ) through his imprint Semi-Precious, is a photobook about in-between spaces, geographically, emotionally, and artistically.
Treasure Island, with its layered histories and stalled redevelopment, became a mirror for a moment in Andrew’s life when everything felt suspended.
The island sits amid a major metropolis yet somehow remains apart from it, and Andrew photographed it from that same stance.
The artist shares: “I’ve always been drawn to the different ways we use land and how we can learn and interpret what it says about our past and present values. So, I couldn’t help but be curious and began to regularly visit to explore and photograph its landscape.”

Treasure Island, a manmade landmass in the San Francisco Bay, has carried many identities: world’s fairground, naval station, radiological training site, and housing for low-income residents. Today, it is once again in transition, as redevelopment reshapes its landscape and community.

I met Birdy on a visit to Treasure Island in the Spring of 2020. We became quick friends, trading snippets of writing and photographs and walking the island together. For Birdy, TI was a temporary refuge, living in her car and then a storage unit, as she received health care at a local hospital.
She eventually moved on to stay with a friend in central Oregon and we fell out of touch. As I sat down to put together this collection of photographs for the book, I re-read everything she send me during this time and one passage hit a certain emotional chord, and is included in The Middle Distance.
I attempted to reach her earlier this year to share some work and check in, but found her number disconnected and all of my messages unanswered. I eventually learned of her passing, though the circumstances are still unknown to me. This book is dedicated to Birdy.
THE MIDDLE DISTANCE is now available and shipping!! Check out the link in bio to order a copy!

Andrew Waits (b. 1983) is a photographer from the Pacific Northwest. He studied Political Science and Communications at the University of Washington and earned an MFA in Photography from the University of Hartford.
His first body of work, Boondock, explored how survival shapes mobility, interconnection, and the idea of home. His first book, Aporia, examined rapid urbanization and its imprint on both the built environment and the collective psyche. The maquette for Aporia won the 2018 Fiebre Dummy Award and was later published by Dalpine Books.
His newest self-published book, The Middle Distance, is available through his imprint, Semi-Precious. He currently lives in Oakland, California. @andrewwaits
