full circle night. “killing me softly” by roberta flack is a song i once loved, then feared, at some point resented, and now feel the most grateful for. it was the song that at 20 yrs old, i practiced incessantly to audition for my dream school, and ultimately enabled me to come to the US. it’s been 13 years since then, and hearing it sung live by ms lauryn hill in honor of roberta flack right in front of me, in a historic year for latinos and koreans at the grammy’s, after watching artists i admire denounce hate, and speak up for immigrants and dreamers, felt deeply personal to me. i am still crying.
but most importantly, HISTORY WAS MADE YESTERDAY! shout out to all of the writers and producers behind “golden”, and a special one to
@ejae_k for winning the first-ever k-pop grammy!!!! and to
@audreynuna and
@rei.ami for playing a key part in the success of this soundtrack. the impact the 3 of u have had in the lives of so many kids and families, is immeasurable. u made history. and continue to make all of us proud. love u.
