Guillermo E. Brown & Carmina Escobar present an evening of innovative new opera Friday through Sunday for @industryopera LAB Series. Brown’s three-part operatic performance features a boundary-pushing, handmade sonic machine. Escobar’s spiral, interdisciplinary opera reimagines the voice as force, friction, and breath through movement, sound, and video. See the link in our bio to purchase tickets. 📷 by @angeloriggi

When asked about the relationship between an artist’s culture and emerging technologies, musician Guillermo Brown cautioned about the risks of using these tools but acknowledged the possibilities they provide for underrepresented voices in the arts. What do you see for the future of technology and art?

We are just one week away from LAB 2026!  The Industry’s first LAB, which took place in 2022, blurred the boundaries of visual art and opera in concept, while in our current iteration, three artists move literally among all the spaces at REDCAT, realizing an opera as an art installation where both artists and audiences take the stage (Matana Roberts); or staging the opera as the moment when idea take physical form in a shaped voice (Carmina Escobar); and taking the manipulation of time, place, and space to its most elemental shape as the stuff of dramaturgy (Guillermo E. Brown). We are delighted to share the full line up with you, starting with our joint programs on the REDCAT Stage from Feb 20-22 with Guillermo E. Brown and Carmina Escobar! Tickets are on sale now at the #LinkInBio!

Hi hi! Nico Rosario here from The Industry, writing to you as we prepare for our upcoming LAB performances next month at REDCAT! The Industry’s LAB series is at the very core of our interdisciplinary experiments, inviting artists to recast the historic art form of opera both onstage and in the gallery to reinvent its shape for our time. During the weeks ahead, I’ll be writing to you with a spotlight of each of this year’s artists—Guillermo E. Brown, Carmina Escobar, and Matana Roberts—to give you a special preview of their plans for this amazing event that will bring together artists and audiences from art and music throughout Los Angeles. This week, I sat down with Guillermo at his Silverlake studio, where things are clearly bubbling up for this composer, percussionist, and mad scientist. The space was literally bursting at the seams with analog and digital noise makers, distorted live cam footage, and pages upon pages of hand-drawn diagrams for The Instrument, a one-of-a-kind audiovisual performance system that Guillermo originally built as part of the Doris Duke Foundation Performing Arts Technology Lab. Guillermo is reconfiguring this instrument especially for LAB 2026—where his playing will be accompanied by esteemed company members from The Industry—and the artist is busy at work in his studio to determine just how The Instrument will look, sound, and interact amid an improvisational environment. No stranger to improvisation, Guillermo has played alongside some of the world’s most preeminent jazz artists, including William Parker, Matthew Shipp, Vijay Iyer, and Anthony Braxton. And his practice has extended from music to film and beyond, including Bee Boy—a past collaboration with filmmaker Charlotte Braithwaite that blends genres, disciplines, and histories to create an urgent and timely percussive response to social injustice. His work at REDCAT promises to be his most groundbreaking yet as a key player in LA’s ar scene. We can’t wait to see you there for his game-changing 3-day residency and performances at this year’s LAB.

@industryopera 's LAB Series expands the definition of opera by inviting artists to reexamine the art form. Following an incubation period at REDCAT, artists Guillermo E. Brown, Carmina Escobar, and Matana Roberts will present works on the stage and in the gallery across a two-week program beginning in February. LAB is a celebration of ideas, imagination, and collaborative risk-taking. Learn more at the link in our bio. Images, from L to R: Photo Guillermo E. Brown by Mary Rozzi.
