⛪🎶 For one night, REDCAT becomes a chapel of sound. Join Wild Up and @calartsredcat on June 6 for The Interior Castle, an evening spanning centuries of artistic and spiritual inquiry inspired by visionary women, most of them cloistered. The program brings together music by medieval abbess Hildegard von Bingen, Baroque Italian nun Isabella Leonarda, and Ethiopian composer-pianist Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, alongside world premieres by LA-based composers @lisel.jpeg and @tiesenga . Built as a kind of musical return-and-refrain, the evening circles back to four luminous piano works by Emahoy, performed by guest artist Vicki Ray, plus Eliza Bagg’s True City, a response to Hildegard’s O presul vere civitas, and Wild Up member M.A. Tiesenga’s The Interior Castle, a foray into St. Teresa of Ávila’s mystical architecture of the soul.

📢 JUST ANNOUNCED 📢 @thebroadmuseum and REDCAT present two stagings of Yoko Ono’s iconic performances as part of The Broad’s special exhibition YOKO ONO: MUSIC OF THE MIND. As noted in @latimes , the exhibition includes, the “re-creation of two of Ono’s groundbreaking performance art works, including 1964’s iconic 'Cut Piece,' which Ono originally performed in Kyoto and Tokyo, before staging its American debut at Carnegie Hall. During that show, Ono sat silently onstage while members of the audience slowly snipped away pieces of her clothes. 'Cut Piece' will be revived this summer by performance and visual artist MPA at REDCAT.“ The evening also includes SKY PIECE TO JESUS CHRIST, performed by @lachamberorchestra , featuring a six-piece classical music ensemble being slowly wrapped in gauze until the musicians can no longer play their instruments. See the link in our bio to purchase tickets. Yoko Ono, Sky Piece to Jesus Christ (1965), performed in Yoko Ono: Half-A-Wind Show, Louisiana Art Museum, Humlebæk, Denmark, 2013. Grammy Award-winning PARTCH Ensemble returns to REDCAT 6/26–6/27! Specializing in the music of iconoclastic composer Harry Partch, the ensemble will debut newly constructed, custom-built replicas of instruments designed by Partch in their annual survey of his music. The evening begins with excerpts from the rarely heard Partch piece, "On the Seventh Day Petals Fell in Petaluma”—a kaleidoscope of swirling timbres that amazes with the composer’s multiple exposure technique—and concludes with the “Prologue” & “Epilogue” from Partch’s midcentury piece, "The Bewitched." New compositions include a solo setting of one of Partch's favorite Chinese poets (Li Po, 701-762 C.E.) and the world premiere of Daniel Corral's "Parable of the Bitter." See the link in our bio to purchase tickets. Photos by @angeloriggi

“I think so much of RHEOLOGY is about recognizing that my time with my mom is finite. I’m literally trying to invent time. I’m using theater—holding onto my mom and forcing her to spend time with me the way that a kid would by making their mom play with them,” Shayok Misha Chowdhury told @brooklynrail during a discussion about his play. At REDCAT June 11–13, RHEOLOGY stars Chowdhury and his real-life mother, Bulbul Chakraborty. A celebrated physicist, Chakraborty won an Obie award for her deeply personal performance in RHEOLOGY. See the link in our bio to learn more and to purchase tickets. Photos by Maria Baranova.

Born in India, writer, director, and performer Shayok Misha Chowdhury creates innovative theater that often explores family, language, and inheritance across generations. For RHEOLOGY, at REDCAT June 11–13, he collaborates with his physicist mother on a genre-defying new play. “Shayok Misha Chowdhury is always a theater artist to keep an eye on, whether he’s directing or writing,” notes New York Magazine, which named RHEOLOGY one of its “16 Plays and Musicals We Can’t Wait to See in 2026.” Chowdhury is the recipient of an Obie Award and a Whiting Award; his play PUBLIC OBSCENITIES was a finalist for the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Drama. Chowdhury describes himself as “many-tentacled.” In addition to his work in the theater, he is also an award-winning music-maker and poet. Those aspects all animate RHEOLOGY, and we’re thrilled to present the West Coast premiere of this ambitious new play racing against time and mortality. See the link in our bio to learn more and to purchase tickets. Photos by Beowulf Sheehan.
