What a refreshing afternoon with my former media arts professor @isaacjulien in Berlin! We went to the show at @galerieweisserelefant of @veronikadraexler and myself about structural violence, to @hamburger_bahnhof to see @zinebsedira , to @juliastoschekfoundation to see @ulyssesjenkinsothervisions and finally to @palaispopulaire to see Isaac‘s work on show there, which is collected by @sammlungwemhoener . It was a pleasure!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We’re really happy to be showing our Buttplug series in Berlin during Gallery Weekend!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ BUTTPLUG 1 (Tannenbaum / Christmas Tree), ceramic sculpture, 30cm*20cm, oil stain glaze, 2023. BUTTPLUG 2 (Narrenkappe / Fool‘s Cap), ceramic sculpture, 27cm*24cm, bronze gold, 2023. BUTTPLUG 3 (Der Heiße / The Hot One), ceramic sculpture, 50cm*33cm*14,5cm, metal black matt finish, 2023. To use or not to use? This question arises in the new series „Buttplug“ (2023), created in collaboration between Patrick Alan Banfield and Mimi Kohler: large glazed clay sculptures that resemble butt plugs. The smooth, erotic form is subversively alienated by a decisive intervention: applied thorns and spikes. Almost everyone has been pricked by a thorn at some point in their lives – a basic, universal experience of pain and nature. Patrick Alan Banfield and Mimi Kohler take this pain and transfer it metaphorically to another level of their art, intensifying the dilemma between sexual pleasure and pain or even death. The potential use of the butt plugs would only be possible once, if at all, and then with life-threatening consequences. Faced with this choice, users and visitors are confronted with the inherent dilemma of freedom. Sartre, in particular, writes about the concept of the fear of freedom. The decision for or against (the use of) the butt plug confronts the individual with the terrible fear and at the same time with the irresistible fascination that comes from ultimate freedom – the freedom to make a choice that could radically change or even end one’s life. #installationart #installation #art #ceramic #natureart #natureartist #buttplug #zeitgenössischekunst #kunst #sculpture #sculptureart #erotic #artstudent #clay #artistsoninstagram #collector #klassejankowski #youngartist #artist #mimikohler #contemporary #rottweil #stuttgart #stuttgartart #gallery #contemporaryartwork #artcollector @klasse_jankowski

‟The artist is present.” With this announcement, galleries, art associations, and museums invite visitors to openings and hope to attract more public interest. But the artist is present anyway through their art. A question is much more urgent: who or what else is present? Ghosts of the past? For example, narratives of assault, emotional blackmail and structural abuse of power. This is what „Chapters of Violence“ brings to light. The artists Veronika Christine DrĂ€xler and Patrick Alan Banfield initiate a joint process of reflection and reappraisal at galerie weißer elefant, which deals with misogynous structures in the exhibition business that go far beyond the boundaries of the gallery spaces. A process is conducted from multiple perspectives: female, male, and institutional. The artist’s experiences result from power structures created by the culturally programmed imbalance between men and women. These power structures, in turn, are based on collective traumas, which are the exhibition’s target. The trauma is present. Power structures, especially those that promote gender inequalities, exist everywhere. They are camouflaged in patterns that culture and society reproduce. The exhibition, curated by Marcus Boxler, is opening on 16 February, 7pm at galerie weisser elefant. #chaptersofviolence #power #control

Say hi to Patrick Alan Banfield! @patrickalanbanfield ➜ CREW Patrick Alan Banfield is a video artist living in Berlin. In addition to video art and his experimental as well as classic documentaries, he directs commercials (for @hornbach_de , among others) and also produces video art and feature films for other filmmakers. Much of his work deals with masculinity and self-awareness, intuitively moving in a field between scientific classification and emotional subjectivity, between reality and fiction. He is interested in the construction of narratives, particularly how stories change when layers are ambivalent in their perceived authenticity – such as in the film-within-a-film narrative layer. Patrick is currently a fellow of the @hessischekulturstiftung with his project SOYBOY, which investigates the cultural struggle in the US for the interpretive sovereignty of gender roles, which also includes (toxic) masculinity. His works have been shown at the @berlinbiennale , at the @mmkfrankfurt , at @palazzostrozzi , at #YeltsinCenter in Yekaterinburg and at #kunsthauswiesbaden, among others. We’re happy he’s now part of the ato crew for collaborations in the field of film and installation art! ➜ Check out his profile and all the other crew members and artists of ato! www.ato.vision 👁 Portrait: @timtyson.xyz #patrickalanbanfield #videoartist #documentaries #videoart #installationart #crew #artist #atovision

Yesterday I visited my longtime friend Veronika DrĂ€xler (@veronikadraexler ) at KĂŒnstlerhof Frohnau in the north of Berlin. Frohnau is a rather chic district of Berlin with many villas. The KĂŒnstlerhof used to serve as a lung hospital, later as a branch of the Karl-Bonhoefer-Nervenklinik and finally as a residence for Bosnian refugees. The area extends over many individual buildings in the forest. Since 1998, more than 40 artists have been able to live and work there in the spacious studios. Veronika has been living in the KĂŒnstlerhof for more than a year and works there accompanied by her dog @trotzkithewhippet . I got a glimpse of her new installative video work, which she will soon present at the UDK to become a MeisterschĂŒler with Prof. Anna Anders. It's about a hunting ceremony in Finland. Our hike through the Frohnau Forest took us in rubber boots along the former strip of the Berlin Wall, past lakes, dunes and moors. It is said that inside the Berlin Ring, energy flows. Outside the ring, calmness flows back into our bodies. I can only recommend slowing down. A visit to KĂŒnstlerhof Frohnau and Veronika is highly recommended! #frohnau #videoart #berlin #forrest #artist #artistsoninstagram #whippet #calmness #installationart #mentalhealth

Moved to Berlin in October. New studio. Moabit. A very nice place. Corona has been quite okay but still struggling with mental issues. I hope summer will be fine! I’m becoming 38 in March. Working on a few artistic documentaries plus creative directing of commercial campaigns and directing photo/video. Thanks to my colleagues and loved ones. Here’s some semi nudes.
