In her works – installations, sculptures, pictorial objects and videos – Jeewi Lee explores traces, memory and temporality, as well as natural processes and materials. In “Where Fragments Linger by the Sea”, the artist turns her attention to the theme of ‘sand’, which is both universal and highly topical.
In addressing the complex geometric and constructive aspects of this process, Jeewi Lee collaborates with the geometric researcher Phillip C. Reiner, with whom she develops her sand sculptures and silkscreen prints.

Where Fragments Linger by the Sea / until 26 June
In cooperation with Phillip C. Reiner
In her installations, sculptures, pictorial objects, and videos, Jeewi Lee explores memory, temporality, and natural processes. In Where Fragments Linger by the Sea, she turns her attention to sand — a material that is both universal and increasingly political.
The exhibition brings together abstract sand paintings and sculptures based on individual grains of sand collected from places including Korea, the USA, Portugal, Spain, Senegal, and Germany. Using CT scans and complex sand-printing processes developed in collaboration with geometric researcher Phillip C. Reiner, Lee transforms microscopic grains into monumental sculptures, revealing their unique structures and traces of time, landscape, and movement.
As both symbol and raw material, sand stands for infinity, everyday life, and one of the world’s most exploited natural resources. Lee’s works invite viewers to consider grains of sand as carriers of memory — shaped by erosion, migration, and human impact.
The exhibition itself unfolds as an immersive, almost meditative landscape of nearly monochromatic works. Where Fragments Linger by the Sea is the first institutional presentation of Lee’s sand works, following their initial presentation at Galerie Sexauer in 2024/2025, which attracted significant media attention.
For the exhibition, new works based on sand from the North Sea region — including Wilhelmshaven’s Südstrand — will be created.

||JEEWI LEE. WHERE FRAGMENTS LINGER BY THE SEA||
Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven, 25 Apr – 21 Jun 2026

Jeewi Lee und Phillip C. Reiner, Fragment Proximity, Field of Fragments, 2025
For Earth Day, our Beyond The Surface series turns to artist Jeewi Lee.
Working with materials such as sand, soil and ash, Lee explores the quiet narratives embedded in matter and the traces left behind by time and place. In our conversation, she reflects on the value of what often goes unnoticed, and the poetic potential of reduction, stillness and transformation.
