Somewhere in 7th-century Japan, a multi-stringed instrument shaped like a sleeping dragon whispered ancient tales, embodying in its sound the Japanese aesthetic of Ma—the sublime beauty found in the silences between the notes. About the same century—but BC, in ancient Greece, a single-string instrument stretched like a golden thread between earth and the cosmos, murmuring divine mathematics to curious ears, revealing the harmony of the spheres through precise ratios.
Centuries later, in a diligent cross-border development process between Jerusalem, Barcelona, and The Hague, OTOK was born. Created by the multidisciplinary collective Wackelkontakt, it got its name from the reversed letters of the traditional Japanese instrument that was its inspiration. This new instrument undresses the old one to its core, distilling it to its most basic element—the single string—and transforming it into an even more ancient instrument: the monochord. A scientific tool developed in ancient Greece by the Pythagorean community, the monochord laid the groundwork for musical theory as we know it—the mathematics of dividing a string into pitch relations.
In this concert Wackelkontakt will perform OTOK’s debut composition, drawing inspiration from the unusual interplay between the natural imagery of Japanese art, Pythagorean musical ratios, and the way both serve as metaphors for the ongoing dissolution of existence, where stability is always an illusion.
Patch Studios hosts a workshop aimed at artists working in the Binckhorst: In-Flux is the first workshop in a research project led by Alberto Cappellina (@atelier.albi ) that proposes collaboration between artists in the Binckhorst in the design and production of a floating platform for the arts.

“Over the past twenty years, the Binckhorst neighbourhood of The Hague has welcomed artists into its evolving landscape, with its identity shaped by their presence. Today, however, the same forces of transformation threaten the continued existence of the artists’ studios, as they are increasingly replaced by residential towers. In-Flux explores what the shared values and practices of the Binckhorst artists are, proposing the creation of a floating platform to spark new connections and strengthen their network. This platform serves both as a symbol of the threat of displacement of arts spaces from land and as a collective commons: a multifunctional stage to discuss how to connect with the city and to advocate for the cultural value artists contribute to.“
Following an introduction and presentation of the project background this first session will ask participants to propose their ideas for a floating exhibition platform and to work together on designs and models.
This input will inform the first phase of design and build to produce a first working version of an exhibition platform designed for the waterways of the Binckhorst.
The session will end with drinks and food and a chance to meet each other.

Coming Thursday as part of the Hacking Worlds we are visiting Patch Studios, an artist-run space and studio complex in Binckhorst area. Started by ArtScience students during Corona, the studios came out of the necessity for shared and open workspace that can host large installations, live action and different kinds of stagings. It is currently run by eleven artists and this Thursday we’ll get to hear about the their space, how they organize and run it, and how their collective work connects to their individual artist practices.

Gave a presentation today at the Rotterdamse Academie van Bouwkunst to a group of master’s students and tutors from architecture and urban planning. Over the coming semesters they will conduct a design studio focused on creative workspaces as nodes in the cultural landscape of The Hague, taking Patch Studios as a point of departure.
I talked to them about how we organise the studio, about the importance of dynamic spaces for creative work, and presented some ideas for how different spatial arrangements can stabilise connections between diverse practices.
Looking forward to welcoming the students into the studio!
