‘Labour of Love’ 2025. Anatomical rocking horse, made of over 60 individual carved pieces of wood, each representing an individual muscle. This work took 6 months to make overall. For me it is about the wonder and fear of children. @patch.studios.nl #sculpture #wood #horse #rockinghorse #anatomy #carving #contemparyart

Gave a presentation today at the Rotterdamse Academie van Bouwkunst to a group of master’s students and tutors from architecture and urban planning. Over the coming semesters they will conduct a design studio focused on creative workspaces as nodes in the cultural landscape of The Hague, taking Patch Studios as a point of departure. I talked to them about how we organise the studio, about the importance of dynamic spaces for creative work, and presented some ideas for how different spatial arrangements can stabilise connections between diverse practices. Looking forward to welcoming the students into the studio! @ravb010 @patch.studios.nl @gemeentedenhaag #denhaag #kunst #broedplaats #ravb #gemeentedenhaag

(1/2) How To Build A Horse. The initial stages of this project involved close examination of wood grain and the patterns of muscle fibres in anatomical models of horses. For each piece of wood, the grain was to align with the direction of muscle fibre growth. This constraint on the construction introduced many challenges and discoveries. The two sides of the animal had to be book-matched, with each piece made in pairs with mirror symmetry. For one thing, this meant I had to shape the parts ambidextrously. I made many drawings and paper templates, and countless test pieces. It was a fascinating process to relate these two living materials, muscle and wood. The wood working process follows a path from grain-matching, two-dimensional fitting into sections, three-dimensional fitting and mirroring of sections, scribing and close fitting. I assembled and disassembled parts many many times; it was a huge challenge working with wood in three dimensions without any straight lines or right angles. There was always a plan, but the structure had to emerge slowly. These photos cover four months of work (with breaks!): taking us up to the point where the horse is ready to attempt to stand up. #horse #anatomy #woodcarving #sculpture #yearofthehorse

🔘⬜️🥬 It was a great pleasure to build this structure for @diana_gheorghiu for her show as part of @noorderlichtphotography . This design is inspired by medieval tabernacles - alter objects to house the sacraments. I built this entirely from metal, apart from the internal support made from polymer foam. The structure is formed of 7 separate sections, connected together with hinges, so that the entire thing can fold together and be perfectly enclosed, like a house, or unfold to form a flat display. All joinery is done with rivets and square tubing. “You are light and cabbage” (video and sculpture), by @diana_gheorghiu is showing as part of @noorderlichtphotography , still on view at @de_deproef until September 7th.
