I know by relinquishing this account, I will somewhat lose access to the people I’ve met on here and the community who donates and circulates my aid posts, but I’m excited to build up sustainable relationships in a more intentional, deeper, and real way than follower and like counts. this account will remain a dead archive until i back up images of some of the most formative years of my life #nostalgia, but will ultimately be deleted. I hope you realize that this shit is possible, that you can divorce yourself from the evil we deem necessary and integral for connection. TLDR; I’m raising funds to be used toward the costs of repairs for my uncle and aunt’s farm and for their continued expenses as they rebuild their lives in St. Catherine, Jamaica. Link in bio. Pictured is the last time I saw my family’s farm almost 15 years ago. On October 28, Hurricane Melissa, the strongest storm of the year, made landfall in Jamaica. After days of radio silence due to power outages, on November 3rd, I finally got word that my uncle and aunt, among other family members, were physically safe but emotionally devastated. Their house is fine, but they are left shell-shocked by the absolutely devastating damage done to their farm, where they raise chicken and cattle. About 75% of their daily sustenance is from what they cultivate or the livestock they raise. The rest of their diet consists of food that they buy using whatever little money they make from the farm. They also use that money for their other living expenses. They sold chicken and beef to the local high school, Old Harbour High. It’s all wiped out. The cows were drowned or just gone. The chickens are gone. Even the chicken coop was blown away. The fruit trees were stripped down to their barks. The herbs and vegetables are gone. They have no water and just got electricity on Saturday night after it was disconnected almost a week before. It’s bad. No, I didn’t have the heart to ask for pictures and videos. It felt cruel to ask. But I have found that people in crisis often don’t have the presence of mind to take pictures, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t have any. Join a broad coalition of autonomous organizers from Chicago for a teach-in (4-7, Chicago Unity Center) and fundraiser (8pm-3am, secret location) to help fundraise to support grassroots land defense efforts to stop Enbridge from rerouting Line 5 through Bad River Bad River Band tribal land and other important territories in the Great Lakes region. The teach in is free, the fundraiser costs $15; masks required and provided at both, the first event has ramps and the second requires going up one flight of stairs. The Line 5 oil pipeline, running from Superior, WI to Sarnia, Ontario, violates Indigenous sovereignty, threatens clean drinking water, and contributes to climate collapse. With the Army Corps of Engineers approval of permits for the Line 5 re-route in Wisconsin and current pre-construction activity, construction impacting the watershed of the Bad River Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and other tribal and non-tribal land and Lake Superior is imminent. The teach-in will provide an overview of the Line 5 oil pipeline, an update on current on the ground efforts to remove the pipeline, how people living in the Chicagoland area are impacted by this and other local water protection efforts. There will be tangible ways presented for attendees to participate in the efforts to stop Line 5.
