Is it true jazz is on its last legs? they teach it in public school community college with plenty of young players gangs of young men on tour and as many young women gigging unnoticed a chat about Monk, Miles or a Moca on vinyl isn’t hard to find if you’re turning over stones but the three ticket holding people decorating this club with their youth won’t fill this room ten years from now half these bands will be halved their legacy of recordings fed to lawless prompters gone for flowers, every one, the draft has been reinstated my son and all his sisters are eligible and abandoned I play american porch music you never hear on porches and still that is not my grief even when watching the youth inside their media the media we were excited to raise them on confirming our suspicion that victory is rarely if ever sweet* I watch these chairs filled with swaying silver hairs and wonder whether their joy will die with them *Paul Muldoon

It’s our album release day today for “Always As Young As We’ll Ever Be” and we’re elated to finally let this one out into the world. It was January of 2024 when we recorded it and it’s been quite the journey since then, more love, more heartbreak, more seasons. It’s admittedly a strange time to drop a record and our hearts are very much with our communities in Minneapolis and beyond, proud of how neighbors are showing up to take care of their neighbors. And perhaps in this small offering to our community and the world there is some soothing embrace here through what music can offer. Here are some photos from the recording session. It was a magical ten days for us conjuring and collaborating and creating with an incredible crew of friends and musicians. Grateful for the time together and hope it finds you where you need it. Celebrated Americana/folk duo @thelowestpair return on January 23rd with the stunning “Always As Young As We’ll Ever Be”, their 1st studio album in six years! With their 8th album, the Lowest Pair prove that over the last dozen years together, they’ve become some of modern roots music’s most mesmerizing, thoughtful purveyors. Produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists), the 10-track album puts their stark lyricism, string-driven arrangements &raw compatibility on brilliant display. The songs do not seek to escape life’s problems but instead sit with them & find the wonder in uncertainty & grace in imperfection. While each track can exist individually, when put together they create an album that unfolds much like a spiritual metamorphosis with each song serving as a different stage in the shedding of old skins. The Lowest Pair has questions. The duo, made up of @winterkendl and @palmertlee , know that we tend to see duality as a problem. We want life to be linear, working through the dark to finally get to the light. Grief to joy, despair to hope, confusion to clarity––not a jangly cycle we can’t escape. But through their incandescent folk songs, the Lowest Pair often ask: What if we sit with the mess? What if that’s not just more peaceful, but more magical, too? “Fare thee well and go to hell, I love you and I’m mad at you. It’s such a theme in my life,” Winter says, then laughs. “Wishing things were different but loving all of it, too.” The Lowest Pair’s musicianship is another beautiful testament not just to playing that breathes but playing that listens. Winter, who grew up in Arkansas but has lived in Washington State for the last two decades, & Lee, a Minnesota native, first gained attention as poetic singer-songwriters on banjos. With an impressive seven album catalog, an adoring fan base, & years on the road, Winter & Lee have reached another artistic plateau with “Always As Young As We’ll Ever Be” & remind us that love, grief, joy, disappointment, failure & renewal are all part of the same beautiful cycle, one that affects us all but one that also interconnects us all.
