Emerging Artist Spotlight
Awakening Magazine congratulates Oxnard artist Carlos Diaz Cruz @seventheartist_ on receiving the Gail Falkner Memorial Fund Scholarship presented by the Museum of Ventura County.
A multidisciplinary artist and Studio Art major at California State University Channel Islands, Carlos works across drawing, illustration, ceramics, and sculpture, exploring themes of identity, memory, symbolism, life, and death through layered imagery informed by personal experience and his Mexican heritage.
Speaking about his work, Carlos shares:
“I am drawn to contrasts such as tradition and modernity, decay and growth, and silence and intensity, using these tensions to create work that feels honest and grounded in lived experience.”
On receiving the scholarship, he reflects:
“It reinforces my confidence not only in the work l’m creating, but also in my future as an artist.”
Congratulations Carlos - we look forward to seeing your practice continue to evolve.

A woman has been arrested following the theft of a copper fountain worth $35,000 in Oxnard, California. 🚨
Here's what we know:
• A woman was arrested in connection with the theft of a copper fountain in Oxnard
• The fountain is valued at approximately $35,000
• The case was covered by KTLA news
Copper theft remains a serious issue in communities across Southern California due to the high resale value of the metal. A theft of this scale — involving a decorative copper fountain worth $35,000 — represents a significant loss, whether from public, private, or commercial property. Oxnard law enforcement made an arrest in the case, signaling active investigation and follow-through on property crime in the area. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity related to metal or property theft to local authorities.

Ventura County beaches have been temporarily closed following a sewage spill in the area. 🚫🌊
• A sewage spill has triggered beach closures across parts of Ventura County
• The closures affect beaches in the Port Hueneme and surrounding areas
• Health officials are warning the public to stay out of affected coastal waters
• The spill poses potential health risks due to contaminated water contact
For Oxnard and Ventura County residents who frequent local beaches, this is an important heads-up before planning any trips to the coast. Sewage spills can introduce harmful bacteria and pathogens into ocean water, making swimming and water contact dangerous. Always check local health department advisories before heading to the beach during incidents like this. Updates on reopening timelines are expected as cleanup and water testing continue.

A potentially historic El Niño is forming in the Pacific — and it could reshape weather patterns across California and the globe by late 2026. 🌊
Here's what NOAA's Climate Prediction Center is reporting:
• El Niño is emerging faster than previously expected, with water temps expected to cross the 0.5°C above-average threshold as early as next month
• There is a 2 in 3 chance El Niño reaches strong or very strong status by fall or winter
• Odds of a rare 'Super' El Niño (water temps 2°C+ above average) between November and January have risen from 1 in 4 to 1 in 3
• There is a 96% chance El Niño persists through winter
• Some computer models suggest this could become the strongest El Niño on record — surpassing the 2015–2016 event, which is currently the strongest in NOAA records dating back to 1950
• Other historical Super El Niño years include 1997–1998, 1982–1983, and 1972–1973
• El Niño typically peaks during the Northern Hemisphere's winter and occurs every 2 to 7 years
For Southern California residents, it's worth noting that strong El Niño events don't always deliver the expected results locally. The 2015–2016 Super El Niño, for example, did not produce the wetter-than-average winter typically associated with the pattern for our region. That said, the southern U.S. is generally expected to see a wetter and cooler winter under strong El Niño conditions, driven by a stronger jet stream. Globally, the event could push 2026 or 2027 toward becoming Earth's warmest years on record. NOAA has already noted it's 'very likely' 2026 will rank among the five warmest years — and El Niño's full impact hasn't even been factored in yet.
📍 Stay weather-aware, Oxnard. We'll keep you updated as this develops.

The Ventura City Council has passed a ban on the retail sale of kratom and nitrous oxide — two substances that have raised public health concerns across the county. 📋 Here's what you need to know:
• The Ventura City Council voted to prohibit the sale of kratom and nitrous oxide within city limits
• Kratom is a plant-based substance often sold in capsules, powders, and drinks
• Nitrous oxide (commonly known as 'laughing gas') has been sold legally in cartridges at various retail locations
• The ban affects retailers such as smoke shops and convenience stores currently carrying these products
• Violators of the new ordinance may face penalties under city code
For residents in Oxnard and across Ventura County, this decision signals a growing push by local governments to regulate substances that fall outside traditional drug enforcement. While this ordinance applies specifically to the City of Ventura, it reflects a broader regional conversation about what gets sold on store shelves — and who has access to it. Other cities in the county could follow with similar measures.

After more than 114 years of operation, Coca-Cola is closing one of its California plants. Here's what we know:
• Coca-Cola has announced the shutdown of a California facility with over 114 years of history
• The plant closure ends more than a century of local production for the beverage giant
• No specific timeline or number of jobs affected was detailed in the initial reporting
• Coca-Cola has not publicly announced a replacement facility within California
For California residents, plant closures like this can ripple across supply chains, local employment, and regional economies. While Oxnard and Ventura County may not feel an immediate direct impact, closures of large-scale manufacturing operations throughout the state can signal broader shifts in how major corporations are restructuring their California footprint — something worth keeping an eye on.
