Just saw Naomi Rincón Gallardo’s Versos de Porquería / Verses of Filth at @fuseboxlive with @outsiderfest last night. Absolutely wild!!! Scavengers, detached arms, and vultures rising from decay, protesting and connecting. Naomi’s work hits hard with necropolitical vibes about marginalization. Queer, decolonial, and totally unforgettable! 🙌 Music and dance by Enrique Arriaga and Venese Medovich Alcantar. Curated by @laura_g_gutierrez Shoutout to @erikameichua for letting me know about this event! I wouldn’t have caught it otherwise. Really nice seeing you again last night. 🫶

OUTsider is excited to be partnering with @fuseboxlive to present a performative screening of the short film “Versos de porquería” / “Verses of Filth” by Naomi Rincón Galllardo. Naomi is a Mexican visual artist whose work is deeply rooted in queer, feminist and decolonial methods and draws from pre-colonial epistemes. In “Verses of Filth,” a bastardized Cihuateteo has become a scavenger/seeker digging up wasteland residues: body fragments and cultural debris. Along with a band of vultures, the scavanger recruits a brigade of arms that have been detached from their bodies and underworld creatures seeking touch, pleasure and revolt. In a Mesoamerican episteme, vultures connect the earth with the underworld by sticking their heads into dead bodies. These scavenger birds eat waste, decay and corpses and are considered purifying agents. The arms that rise from the grave insist on raising their decapitated fist in protest. Still, they also insist on seeking bonds of proximity with other arms, caressing, repairing, documenting, snapping, signing, and reading words that give an account of their existence. Enrique Arriaga and Venese Medovich Alcantar will join Naomi for this special event at Fusebox to enhance the spoken word performance and projection by bringing electronic music and dance to the live performance. Two opportunities to catch it at Fusebox Festival! April 18 at 9pm April 19 at 1pm (sold out) Crashbox 5305 Bolm Rd UNIT 12 ticket link in bio graphics by @rolandosepulvedaii

OUTsider is excited to partner with @fuseboxlive to bring Mexican visual artist Naomi Rincón Gallardo to Austin for the first time!! ✨🖤✨ 💥“Versos de porquería” / “Verses of Filth”💥 Naomi is joined by Mexican sound artist Enrique Arriaga and local movement artist Venese Alcantar for a performative screening that intertwines the short film Verses of Filth with live sound, performance and oratory. The title Verses of Filth refers to a pre-Hispanic mortuary chant called Tzocuicatl (chant of filth), which is part of a ritual rife with scatological allusions that accompanies the putrefaction of the body and later its cremation. The purpose of the ritual is to drain the stench and filth from a body and propitiate a catharsis for the pain caused by the death of a loved one. In Verses of Filth, a bastardized Cihuateteo has become a scavenger/seeker digging up wasteland residues: body fragments and cultural debris. Along with a band of vultures, the scavenger recruits a brigade of arms that have been detached from their bodies and underworld creatures seeking touch, pleasure and revolt. In a Mesoamerican episteme, vultures connect the earth with the underworld by sticking their heads into dead bodies. These scavenger birds eat waste, decay and corpses and are considered purifying agents. The arms that rise from the grave insist on raising their decapitated fist in protest. We are proud to present the twelfth edition of the Gutterblood Talk Show. Performance Art in Austin: A Core Sample Monday, April 6 Livestream at 7pm Our guest host Michael Anthony Garcia, a primary and pioneering Austin performance artist and curator, will be joined by and our guests Ron Berry, founder and Artistic Director of the Fusebox Festival, Laura G. Gutiérrez, Artistic Director of the OUTsider Fest, and Steve Parker, a ground breaking and inter-nationally known Austin musician, artist and curator. Subscribe to our YouTube channel to get notified when we go live! Link in bio 🔗 The Importance of Performance Art: Performance art is a non-traditional genre that took root early in the twentieth century with the avant-garde movement Dada that erupted in 1916 during the first World War. It was the beginning of what we call today “inter-disciplinary practice” combining elements of visual art, dance, music, theater, film and writing among others to create culturally relevant spectacles and experiences, and directly connecting artists to their audiences. Performance Art doesn’t fit neatly into any one art category or market and transcends mere entertainment. For this reason it’s resistant to the mainstream and challenges assumptions about what art can be. Awareness and support of performance art in Austin was relatively thin compared to Houston and other cosmopolitan centers in the US until the early 2000’s, when alternative spaces instigated on the fringe by artists and their communities began to emerge. Spaces such as Co-Lab Projects, Museum of Human Achievement, MASS Gallery, and Fusebox (which began installing performances in various DIY venues around town in 2005), changed the course of the Austin art scene, and brought it into the global arena of contemporary art. A glimpse into some of this yrs @outsiderfest . So thankful to have been able to shoot this brilliant festival again. It’s such a necessary reminder of our collective power and resilience in a world that seems to be destabilizing more and more every day. S/O to @tonykrash for the invite and to every person who puts in the work to make this the most incredible dreamy few days to shoot year after year. ✨💪🏼
