Found Faith, 2026 Wood, directional caster 4000 x 4000 x 1080 mm The concept behind ‘Found Faith’ began with a church pew gifted by a senior artist and used daily in Terry’s studio. Removed from its original religious setting, the pew becomes an ordinary bench whose context and meaning shift dramatically. On approach, the piece presents a series of contradictions. It both invites and resists use: formed as a continuous circle, it reads as a bench but denies conventional entry. Though it references a pew and the idea of faith, it is displayed within a commercial art fair. It appears solid, yet it sits on industrial casters and will spin when pushed, an aesthetic and functional counterpoint between clerical association and pragmatic hardware. In this work, ‘Faith’ denotes the motivations and personal convictions that propel us forward, less a theological belief than the forces we hold on to in life. ‘Found’ signals Terry’s ongoing engagement with found objects and the ready-made, an inquiry he plans to expand as his practice evolves. At the outset of his ‘Found’ series, THE BOTANICAL is pleased to support Terry’s commissioned piece for the Yi Tai sector at Art Central Hong Kong 2026. Square Street Gallery is pleased to present ‘Found Faith’, a new commission by OrangeTerry for the Yi Tai sector at Art Central 2026. ‘Found Faith’ takes inspiration from a church pew gifted by a senior artist friend, which is used in OrangeTerry’s studio as an everyday object. A church pew is transformed into an ordinary, everyday bench for sitting when its context changes to an object in the studio. The church pew at first glance acts as a reliable spiritual and physical anchor, and yet is destabilised by wheels which send it constantly spinning pointlessly in place when activated. This action mirrors the contemporary phenomenon of commodifying faith. The traditional concept of faith as unwavering has shifted, often becoming increasingly based on the possession of material objects rather than immaterial beliefs or goals (spiritual or otherwise). In the case of ‘Found Faith,’ faith refers to what one holds onto to keep pushing forward in life, like a motivation or life goal, rather than religious faith. In the face of contemporary society and increasing uncertainty, faith becomes something that one stumbles upon, like a found object ready to be used. When our faith is easily influenced and disrupted by our environment and circumstance, are we ready to face the powerlessness that comes with constantly shifting faith? As opposed to the readymade ‘found faith’ governed by external influences around us, adrift according to trends, situations, and so on, it is only through the act of internal questioning and sorting through the answers that FAITH is FOUND. @orangeterry @artcentralhk
