Thank you very much to Jonah and the team at @openbionics for collaborating with me to make the best device with the best custom solutions. Opening up to a professional about your disability is an extremely vulnerable thing, especially when I spend so much time in my profession attempting confidence.
It turns out a fancy looking robotic hand is NOT the best solution for me and the flashiest looking solutions usually only scratch the surface of our needs. The hero flex is a fantastic device which may look more simple but is much more durable and effective at specific tasks. I look forward to experimenting with the different attachments to discover future uses. At the age of 37 I am still learning new ways to do things and it’s great for your brain to keep the old problem solving muscles active.
I am lucky enough to have insurance through marriage, but even so, these types of devices can still be expensive and I appreciate Jonah and Open Bionics working with me to maximize the benefit and find every possible way to make a device like this affordable on an actor’s budget.

We made it to appointment number 4 of this NHS docuseries! In this appointment, MORE socket fittings and design choices, but I think this might be the final step to getting my socket done so that we can start playing with some bionic hands and getting to the fun part! 🦾
I wanted to be very transparent throughout this series to show you exactly how it goes and this is 4th appointment where we are still on the socket. It’s a long process and I hope some of my insights resonate -
but the fact that we can try multiple multi-grip devices now through the NHS is definitely an amazing thing! If you want to trial a Hero PRO, you are entitled to that. You can ask for a Hero PRO at your appointment or comment below and we can get a demo sent to your clinic. If they don’t have a Hero PRO demo there, let us know and we’ll ship one to you.
As someone who helped to develop the Hero Pro and also get the Multi-grip policy adopted by the NHS, this feels like a full-circle moment. I get to experience two things I contributed to, out in the wild!
I’m excited to see what the final product will both look and feel like. 👀
