🔷About the Artist:
Miah Chalfant— also known as Heóvá’é’e (Yellow Hair Woman) — is a contemporary artist, storyteller, and rancher whose work bridges the worlds of her ancestors and the present day. An enrolled member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, she was raised in the rolling plains and Wolf Mountains of her southeastern Montana homelands.
She studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she deepened her knowledge of traditional designs rooted in ledger art and painted hides. Through her work, she carries forward these visual traditions, blending them with contemporary color and ideas to create a dialogue between past and present.
Drawing inspiration from ranch life, cowboying, kinship, and the strength of her culture, Chalfant’s work honors her ancestors while sharing the lived experiences of a young Indigenous woman. Through each piece, she uplifts her community and explores new possibilities for Indigenous art in the contemporary world.

From the bottom of our hearts: THANK YOU.
✨Your generosity during Missoula Gives, directly supports the 2026-2027 residency season. Because of YOU, we’re getting closer to funding the 23 2026-27 artists-in-residence sessions - including their lodging, daily stipends, and community presentations.
💙 Together, we can ensure that our incoming artists have the essential time, space, and resources they need to create meaningful, place-based work across Western Montana.
✨We just wrapped our 2026 Spring session with 4 powerhouse artists - @kellyannmarie , @m.d.schaff , @folded_poetry & @candacegarlock ! Thanks for all the marks you've left with us, at your sites, at the Blue House, and in Missoula while in-residence!
We celebrate ALL of your creative explorations, play, discoveries, friendships, and accomplishments made this past month. And we hope you pack some of those good vibes and take them on to your next stopping place.

Can’t believe my Missoula artist residency is coming to an end so soon! This time has been invaluable for exploring new design ideas at the @missoulapubliclibrary maker space. Thanks so much to @openairmt for the opportunity to explore designs like this hand-cut leather continuous sculpture 🥰 Going to pitch it for a client project this afternoon! 🤞🏻
