Join us to celebrate IACP finalist Alana Kysar and her vibrant new cookbook, Aloha Veggies: Veg-Forward Recipes Celebrating the Flavors of Hawai‘i.  In conversation with James Beard Award–winning author Kristina Cho, Alana will share how she brings vegetables to the center of beloved local dishes, reimagining Hawai’i’s local plate lunch with creativity and care. This 2.5-hour class is for beginners in machine sewing or for those who would like a refresher. You’ll walk away with a handmade elastic waist skirt of your own design. Students decide on desired length and fullness. The instructor will review machine operation basics and go over fabric handling. Students will receive a supply list before the start of class. Sewing machines and ironing equipment are provided in the clubhouse. You are also welcome to bring your own machine (just let the instructor know ahead of time). This session is $175/person and limited to just 6 participants, so you can enjoy personalized guidance. Added bonus: Workshop participants will receive 10% off their fabric purchase for class materials at Britex Fabrics! ​ Jamie Lau is a fashion designer and native San Franciscan. She infuses a playful nostalgia into her work by transforming simple silhouettes into fashion-forward looks cut and sewn from Japanese textiles, luxurious brocades, handwoven ikats, and her own textile designs. In addition to teaching sewing, she is a published author and wrote BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern, an in-depth patternmaking and sewing guide to mastering iconic looks from the 1920s to 1980s. Jamie’s work has been featured in the The New York Times, Martha Stewart Weddings, and San Francisco magazine.

In honor of SF Small Business Week, we’re highlighting some of our favorite small businesses. SF Democratic Party member Lily Ho chose On Waverly, a gift shop located in Chinatown. On Waverly is owned by two Asian-American sisters who wanted to highlight the work of Asian-American creators, especially those local to the Bay Area and California. On Waverly also hosts community events to bring Asian-Americans together, but everyone is welcome! Their goods range from books, clothes, stickers, art, and much more for anyone on your gift list or for yourself!

What a day on Waverly. 🌸✨ We had the absolute honor of welcoming Minnie Phan, illustrator of The Yellow Áo Dài, for a book signing with us — and the love in that room was something truly special.
