Cedar’s Kin by Omar Gandhi Architects is a hillside residence that cascades toward Lake Huron through a series of interconnected volumes shaped by the steep terrain of the eastern shore. The program is distributed across a main house, a guest cabin, and a beach hut — each sharing the same formal language and extending the architecture across the landscape.
Each volume rotates subtly to align with existing openings in the tree canopy, framing views of the lake while preserving the surrounding forest. Open terrace spaces project between volumes, creating a bridge between interior and canopy. The exterior is clad in eastern white cedar, which continues seamlessly into interior ceilings paired with oak millwork — forming a continuous, enveloping surface. Environmental sensitivity guided the entire process, with early collaboration with local conservation authorities informing the siting and strategies for tree preservation and erosion reduction.

Haystack Mountain School of Craft //
Deer Isle. Maine
Edward Larrabee Barnes, Architect (1915-2004)
Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is an internationally renowned craft school founded in 1950 and located on the rocky Atlantic coast of Deer Isle, Maine. Its stunning campus, designed by architect Edward Larrabee Barnes and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, earned the American Institute of Architects’ Twenty-five Year Award — a recognition given to structures whose construction and original intent have stood the test of time.
While the surrounding landscape continues to evolve and various aspects of the school grow and change with the times, Barnes’s core architectural vision remains largely intact, a testament to the enduring harmony between the buildings and their dramatic coastal setting. The school hosts summer workshops of one to three weeks in disciplines ranging from blacksmithing and clay to fibers, glass, and wood, all taught by visiting artists rather than permanent faculty, and is open to makers of all skill levels seeking a supportive creative community.
More to come.

Cedar’s Kin, a sprawling residential complex by @og_architect , is threaded through the treeline on the eastern shores of Lake Huron, making the most of light and views across its waterfront site in Huron County, Ontario.
Perched on a forested bluff above the beach, the house is set across three levels and divided into three distinct but connected elements, alongside a freestanding guest cabin and a beach hut closer to the shoreline. The 5,000 sq ft programme unfolds through a central pavilion, accessed from level two via a bridge, opening onto main living spaces where the sweep of the lake is held in view.
The proximity of the trees and the west-facing lake elevation shape both interiors and exteriors, with light dappled by branches at sunset. Careful planning reduces potential erosion while preserving as many trees as possible, resulting in a coherent ensemble of architectural forms in harmony with their surroundings.

Cedar’s Kin
Lake Huron Coast, Ontario
Nestled into the cedar canopy of a steep, forested site, Cedar’s Kin responds to the opportunities and constraints of the hillside. The home is organized as a series of interconnected volumes that step down toward the water. The cascading arrangement establishes a clear spatial sequence – users arrive at the top of the hill and gradually descend through the project toward the beach – allowing the architecture to engage the landscape at multiple elevations.
