Durante séculos, centenas de mulheres viajaram até à capela de San Paolo, em Galatina (região da Apúlia), em busca de cura, dando origem a um ritual ligado à Pizzica Taranta e ao tarantismo no sul de Itália 🕷️. A origem do fenómeno estava no medo da picada da tarântula, associada à melancolia, depressão e comportamentos erráticos. O ritual de cura, marcado por danças frenéticas e aceleradas, funcionava como uma forma de libertação emocional e cultural.
Esta história de música e dança, entre o sagrado e o profano, está na base de San Paolo di Galatina, projeto colaborativo de Raül Refree e Maria Mazzotta, lançado em janeiro deste ano, que tem encantado a crítica europeia pelo seu invulgar equilíbrio entre tradição e contemporaneidade.

For centuries, hundreds of women travelled to the chapel of San Paolo in Galatina (Apulia region) in search of healing, giving rise to a ritual linked to the Pizzica Taranta and tarantism in Southern Italy 🕷️. The origin of this phenomenon lay in the fear of the tarantula’s bite, associated with melancholy, depression, and erratic behaviour. The healing ritual, marked by frenetic and fast-paced dances, functioned as a form of emotional and cultural release.
This story of music and dance, suspended between the sacred and the profane, forms the basis of San Paolo di Galatina, a collaborative project by Raül Refree and Maria Mazzotta, released in January this year, which has been captivating European critics with its unusual balance between tradition and contemporaneity.
