Ed Tapper reviews #OdysseyOpera’s production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Last Savage in the June 2026 issue of @opera_magazine , writing, “For the Odyssey Opera presentation, partnering with @bmopmusic@eveasummer ’s semi-staging employed only a few props, but the glitzy 1960s costumes of Brooke @stantoncostumes succeeded in setting the comic mood and evoking the period. The cast was uniformly excellent… The fine Odyssey chorus wore multiple hats — singing wonderfully, arranging props and taking on many bit parts. @gilroseconductor led a spirited, committed performance of this delightful operatic gem.” #OOSavage 📸 Winslow Townson

Commissioned by @odysseyopera , @markadamomusic ’s new opera, Sarah in the Theatre, is a fantasy on the life and work of pioneering opera conductor, stage director, and impresario Sarah Caldwell. @chqopera ’s 16 young artists will sing all principal and ensemble roles in the first piano-vocal workshop of the opera’s second act. Following a reading of the complete act, the two-week workshop concludes with a public presentation of excerpts and conversation with the composer-librettist. The Chautauqua (@chq1874 ) audience — which saw Adamo’s first opera, Little Women, in 2002 — will have a special window into his work dramatizing the career of a true American trailblazer. This performance is paired with the first workshop of a new adaptation of Anne of Green Gables by composer @danikaloren and librettist @rvavrek . July 10 • 3:15 PM ET Elizabeth S. Lenna Hall, adjacent to Fletcher Music Hall Tickets for this event are $20 • ticketing in bio #OdysseyOpera #OOSarah

Six years ago today, Gunther Schuller: The Fisherman and His Wife dropped on @bmopsound . This recording captures the 2015 memorial performance of the family-friendly opera which #OdysseyOpera presented in partnership with our friends at @bmopmusic . John Updike’s libretto for this work — by Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer, conductor, horn player, author, historian educator, publisher, and jazz musician Gunther Schuller — tells the story of a fisherman’s greedy wife who pushes him to ask for more and more favors from an enchanted fish he captured and released into the sea. When the wife finally demands too much, the fish takes away all it has granted and the couple returns to their simple home having learned a valuable lesson. The widely celebrated recording—a “Best of 2020” pick by New York Arts Journal, the Boston Musical Intelligencer, and Textura—has The Arts Fuse heralding, “Bravo to @gilroseconductor and his devoted singers and players for bringing this major work out of undeserved obscurity. May its fame grow as big as a castle!” This fable makes a great opera introduction for young listeners of all ages. There’s been much news about the #Moon lately, Voyagers. While #OdysseyOpera has not *yet* programmed a space-based or Moon-centric opera, we can’t forget the role our planet’s only natural satellite played in our 2015 staging of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s quintessentially English opera, Sir John in Love. It’s beneath the Moon in the depths of Windsor Forest the exploits of the vain and boastful knight, Sir John Falstaff, are revealed — and reveled — in the grand tradition of Shakespearean comedy. We look forward with delight when we’ll share the exciting plans we’re making. We’re glad you’re part of this adventure called Odyssey Opera. #OOSirJohn 📸 Kathy Wittman of @ballsquarefilms

At @theartsfuse , Aaron Keebaugh praises “Odyssey Opera’s recent staging, in collaboration with @bmopmusic , of Menotti’s The Last Savage at the Huntington Avenue Theatre [as] a reminder of why the composer struck such a popular chord during the 20th century… #OdysseyOpera’s fine cast of singers delivered all the moments of lampoon with striking appeal… All told, The Last Savage delivered good tunes, a delightfully twisted story, and all-around cheer.” • complete review at link in bio #OOSavage

Voyagers, Kevin Wells gives five of five stars in his @bachtrack review. “If timing is everything, then #OdysseyOpera’s production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s 1963 opera The Last Savage convincingly makes the case that its time has come,” he acclaims. “Their production makes one wonder just what sort of ideological captivity blinded the critics reviewing the 1964 Met premiere… Singers and action were front and center and, thanks to universally clear diction, made the supertitles superfluous… Odyssey’s cast of stalwarts, including the chorus and choristers who took on solo parts, colorfully embodied their characters. ★★★★★” • complete review in bio #OOSavage

Reviewer Lee Eiseman praises #OdysseyOpera’s production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Last Savage in The Boston Musical Intelligencer, writing, “Every word came across in the dry, speech-friendly theater, where the proscenium arch admonishes all who tread its boards ‘To hold, as ‘twere, the mirror up to nature.’ But comedy was clearly part of nature for Shakespeare. And the artful comedians on stage once again obeyed the dictum to reveal human truths… @gilroseconductor considerately presided over a company of singers with comic and vocal genius and players who can make any composer sound great. They have shown doubters that Menotti is now an unabashed rather than a guilty pleasure.” • complete review at link in bio #OOSavage
