A windy little moment in Kentucky with Annick Odomā weād only just met, but quickly decided to catch a field recording out in the elements. Annickās carrying on a tradition she learned directly from Phyllis Marks, one of the last of her kind ā a ballad singer who kept centuries of story alive with her voice alone.

@lindsaymccaw is singing many choir parts and harmonies on the album, in particular Bow and Balance! I love love love her sense of humor in her own music and art, including projects like @flyingcardboardtheater@the_boblo_islanders@roochietoochie and @thevelvetboys (with @renofour who is also on the album!). Lindsay also totally is on the short list of folks who inspired me to organize the @morgantowncrankiefestival where sheāll also be performing thanks to the @cultural_vibrancy micro grant.
Note: Lindsayās puppets are way cooler than these sock monkey stock photos ever could be. Youāll have to go check out one of her puppet shows to be in the know. š

Kirsten Carey played a lot of the songs on the album with me in a live band in Detroit the year before we recorded, and she joined on the album for Bow and Balance as well as Bingham Bailey. Youāll hear wild guitar in the background of both, as well as some cool noises and soundscapes that really add to the off-kilter feelings I was going for in some sections of both songs.
I think Kirsten may be the collaborator on this album that Iāve known the longest! We were in the same dorm hallway and met our first week of class. Itās wild to see all the cool things sheās gotten up to since then, including diving into learning to play shamisen and getting so into it that sheās relocated to Japan.
Her band @therealthrowaway is one of the projects that inspired 22-year-old me to think, āI want to write my own music.ā Her witty lyrics and her badass-ness are what brings me back to her songs again and again! Hope youāll check them out ā„ļø

Jon is SO GOOD at BASS! I remember thinking that when we first met in college, my first week in the studio, and I still think that now.
Iām so happy he was down to join me on āHello Billā on upright and in āBingham Baileyā and āTaking Elevatorsā on electric.
Heās doing so many cool projects in SE Michigan itās hard to keep track, but definitely check out all the cool stuff he organizes at @ziggysypsilanti and his concerts with @araborchestra and with @annarborsymphony .
He also posts really cool videos on his insta sometimes playing really hard things on bass that he makes look easy šš®āšØ

Hannah Standiford and I actually met just a couple of months before we went into the studio. We were both at a @banthateabar ās @pittsburghsoundpreserve at the suggestion of @guaguanco127 , who was like, āAnnick, you need to know this other person who likes experimental stuff AND folk.ā And boy was he right!!
Hannah is the voice you hear on almost all of the songs with close harmony, definitely the ones that are super stripped down. Sheās also playing banjo on Bow and Balance.
Itās such a joy to sing with her, so much so that weāre now in a band @wakerobinband with @jdthswanson ! As a trio, weāve got lots of local Morgantown and Pittsburgh gigs coming up, including at @genesbeergarden this Friday, May 15.

Walter Prettyman
As elusive as he is awesome, Walt was just the fiddler I wanted to join me on Bow and Balance! Iād played with him in the pit at Detroit Cantastoria, and it was a treat to have him come in and play for the album. He plays in a ton of different groups around SE Michigan, including @roochietoochie and @the_boblo_islanders . If youāve not had the pleasure of seeing those bands play, go go go go!
