“One of the most difficult challenges I have faced in my life as a young aspiring actor then, was trying to build my career while living on the mainland BADAGRY, to be precise in Lagos. In this industry, where you stay matters a lot. Many clients prefer actors who live on the island because they believe they are more accessible, punctual, and easier to work with. Because of this, I found myself in a very uncomfortable position. Most times, I had to lie that I lived on the island just to secure a gig. The truth is, I stay far on the mainland, and moving from there to the island is not easy. Lagos traffic alone can break you. it’s stressful and unpredictable. I felt embarrassed many times, but I knew that if I told the truth, I might lose the opportunity. People assume that if you stay on the mainland, you won’t be able to meet up on time, or they’ll have to spend extra money on transportation. So, to stay in the game, I did what I had to do. My routine was tough. I would sleep during the day just so I could prepare for the stress ahead. I woke up as early as 4am to start my journey, getting to the junction by 5 am to catch the first bus. From there, I moved through different routes until I finally reached the island—sometimes after hours on the road. Yet, when I arrived, I had to look fresh, clean, and professional. No one needed to see the struggle behind my appearance. I made sure I kept to time and delivered my best, because I knew if I didn’t prove myself, all the stress would be for nothing. Financially, it was even harder. I didn’t always have money. I had to borrow from my mother and friends just to afford transportation. And the painful part was that not every opportunity paid. some were just collaborations or auditions. That meant spending money and going back home with nothing but hope…” (…continued in comments) - Olajide Damilola (ODD MEAN)
