We’ve welcomed so many new ocean lovers into our community this year, so it feels like the perfect time to re-introduce ourselves and the work we do. Hello! We’re Ocean Wise, a Canadian ocean conservation nonprofit based in Vancouver. Our vision is a world where the ocean is healthy and thriving, and we’re on a mission to build a global community that takes meaningful action to protect and restore it. We focus on addressing three major challenges facing our ocean: climate change, plastic pollution, and overfishing. Our teams lead conservation projects that protect whales, restore kelp forests, support sustainable fisheries, reduce plastic pollution, and educate and empower youth from elementary school through young adulthood. The ocean covers more than 70% of our planet and connects us all. Thanks for being part of this community — we’re so glad you’re here. Got any questions about one of our conservation initiatives? Drop them in the comments below!

Happy World Ocean Day from all of us at Ocean Wise! We need the ocean, the ocean needs us. The ocean covers over 70% of the Earth’s surface. It gives us every second breath we take, regulates our climate, and is home to an incredible diversity of life. Unfortunately, our ocean is under threat from pollution, overfishing, and climate change. But there is hope - and it starts with you. Head to ocean.org to find out how your #OneSmallAction can turn the tide for ocean abundance! ps. want to celebrate the ocean at an event in your community? Head to oceanweekcan.ca to see what's happening near you today! And if you're in Vancouver, look out for @scienceworldca , @canadaplace , @vanconventions , and Pacific Coliseum (@pne_playland ) lit up blue to celebrate the ocean.

What we can’t see is putting killer whales at risk. New research shows toxic pollution in BC’s coastal sediments is moving through the food web, from Chinook salmon to endangered Southern Resident killer whales. The solution starts upstream. With stronger protections and better practices, we can reduce pollution and protect marine life. What a whirlwind five years it has been… We’re so grateful to the Government of Canada for its support of the Waves of Change partnership, made possible through funding provided by the Environmental Damages Fund’s Climate Action and Awareness Fund. Together with @greenlearning Canada, @cgeducation_ , and @takingitglobal we’ve had an incredible opportunity to inspire and collaborate in ways we had never imagined. From the National Sea Dome tour to ecards to #decarbonize to the Commit2Act app we had a huge impact! Thank you to all the incredible people who made these initiatives happen. Thank you for making Waves of Change such a success. ❤️🌊 To learn more about how to book the Sea Dome, check out the link in our bio!

#Maythefourth be with Yoda! No, we don’t mean the tiny green Jedi (although we are also a fan), we mean Yoda—a remarkable southern resident killer whale. Born in 2003 as the second calf of Lea, Yoda inherited the strength, courage and curiosity of her lineage. She swims, hunts and plays alongside her brothers, Lobo and Kelp, and travels with Opus and her son Sonata. Yoda is one of the very few breeding females left in the endangered population of southern resident killer whales. She reminds us that nature, like the galaxy, is full of wonder and balance. If the Force of the ocean is strong with you today, consider symbolically adopting Yoda. Your symbolic adoption will help support ongoing research and initiatives to help whale populations thrive. Learn how at the link in our bio.

Help us get coffee cups and lids added to Canada’s single-use plastics ban by signing our petition (link in bio!). Last week we released our 2025 Shoreline Impact Report, which showed a clear decline in items already covered by the ban, including a 16% drop in plastic bags and a 3% drop in cutlery. But coffee cups? They rose by 19%. Canada's plastic ban is clearly working, but we can use our voices to make it stronger.
