When my family lived in Brooklyn we were lucky enough to have an elevator in our apartment building. And when you looked down to see the matte almost rubbery surface it looked like a hundred tiny nails hammered in a perfect grid. I stared at it enough over the years that when the interior light reflected on the nail heads it made me think of the way abalone inlay would peek through wood; a familiar surface I associated with intricate craft work I saw in houses growing up or at the Korean wing at the Met Museum.
Pebble Stonescape with Abalone Grid Dots loosely interprets fragments of an associated past combined with everyday surfaces to create an intimate landscape.
Drawing from the concept of Ancient Scholar Stones (Gongshi, as known in China starting from the Tang Dynasty, Suseok in Korea and Suiseki in Japan) where stones were selected based on their unique characteristics personifying a living spirit within - the notion that nature is alive. I wanted to make a series of work interpreting the many phases of this spirit becoming, wanting to unveil itself and then finding itself trapped again, a timelapse between the stones we associate with ones from nature and the ones man made -reconciling everything in between, therefore becoming a new moment in itself.

It’s been almost a year and a half since moving to Maine from NYC. At first the silence was oddly unnerving. No jackhammers, no car horns, no sidewalk arguments, and of course our favorite: the 3 a.m. fireworks display reminding us we were indeed living the “urban life,” complete with involuntary heart palpitations.
Now all of that has been replaced by birds squawking, the hot water kettle boiling, our kitten tossing around his new toy (still not sure if the bell attached was a blessing or a curse), and actual squirrels in our walls—whose scratching seems to have evolved into what sounds like a never-ending manuscript.
Work has slowed down a lot. A year ago, I would have panicked, but here it doesn’t feel natural to stay as perpetually overwhelmed as I was in the city. I’ve started embracing the extra time in my day—time once eaten up by parking, traffic, and all the usual stressors—replacing it with room to think rather than rushing toward productivity. Anyone who knows me knows I thrive on being a busybody, but with this quiet and spaciousness entering my life, I’m finally letting that old muscle memory relax. It’s challenging, but it feels worthwhile.
All this is to say: I’ve made a conscious decision to make less and to focus on what has always mattered most to me—economy of materials and creating with clear purpose. Instead of maintaining a volume-heavy inventory, I’ll be producing fewer pieces and aiming for higher quality, minimizing waste. I’ll also be devoting more time to fine art in between production.
My sense of time has shifted here in many ways, and I value it more now. It no longer exists simply to be filled with making for the sake of making—it’s being redistributed toward meaningful parts of life that I’ve long neglected, making me feel a little more whole and present as a maker.
Thank you, truly, for your support. It means so much to pack every online order, imagining the care I put into the process translates into how the piece lives in your space—hopefully without squirrels, though if you do have them, I hope they’re writing a damn good manuscript.
Best,
Julie

Settling here in Maine while looking for a studio I’ve found some time to carve out some archived projects from years past and one I’ve been meaning to share was a small project for a home renovated by @model.practice in conjunction with designers @jesseparrislamb of a 1890’s townhouse in Park Slope. The first relic uncovered during the demo was a ceramic speaking tube, (aka voice pipeline) originally installed to streamline the communication between the first and lower level of the house. I was asked to design a modern version of the original to complete the other half and thus create a nice dialogue between the past and present of this historical home accessory. After some sketches and prototypes, the simplest designed mouthpiece of a hand thrown flared insert and matching frame was chosen using white stoneware mid fired with a matte glaze. Thank you for letting me be the tiniest sliver in your house, it’s quite an honor to be among such notable designs such as @alexandrakohldesign and @eggcollective - for more images you can view them on @archdigest online titled, “Step Inside a Circa 1890 Brooklyn Brownstone Designed for Three Generations” by Vaishnavi Nayel Talawadekar.
