💫Introducing first year MFA student Oliver Getley💫 @o_getley Oliver Getley (b.1996, Stafford) is an interdisciplinary artist working between London and Leeds. His expanded sculptural practice is concept and process driven. A central concern of his practice is the creation of sculptural encounters through a ‘reverse engineering’ of objects and sites, using formal approaches to found material. He uses collaborative and improvisatory techniques to experiment across projects using sound, technology and site-responsive exhibition making. Recent activity has centred around the development of experimental tactics in the studio. These tactics unpick sites, objects and constructed scenarios; exploring questions of accumulation, definition, fictionalisation and institutionalisation through a miscommunication and resurrection of material. He is a founding member of LAX (2024-ongoing) & Freehold Projects (2019-20), both artist-led programming groups operating within Leeds. Previous residencies & development programmes include, UKNA’s New Artist Collective (2025), YSI Sculpture Network (2022) & Into the Wild (2020). His work has been exhibited across the UK, including New Contemporaries at South London Gallery & MIMA (2026), Leeds Art Gallery (2023), Eastside Projects (2022) & Camden Art Centre (2022). Heading up to Middlesbrough this week to finish off the install of Site Built at @new_contemporaries @mimauseful . The show opens to public Friday 8th May, with the opening event on Thursday 14th - if you can, come along! As I’ve continued to rework Site Built over the past year, I’ve been reflecting on the successes and failures of the work. NC has been a great opportunity to revisit and refine a work from 3 years ago. I’m still learning new things about Site Built as it moves into new contexts - I guess, the clue’s in the name. Another, more unexpected thing I’ve had to reckon with is the strange experience of presenting work this visibly, and the criticism (for better or worse) that comes with it. It’s a bit of a dream come true to have work reviewed in @art_monthly_uk , even if it wasn’t quite the impression I’d intended. It’s a reminder that you can’t choose the criticism you receive. (For want of a better word, ouch!) Jokes aside, I’m grateful for all of the reviews and the writers who’ve taken the time to visit the show at @southlondongallery . Shout out to the OG reviewer, Ben Barra from 2023 (links in bio).

│ waiting Benjamin Barra and Oliver Getley LAX, Leeds │15 – 27 August 2025 Please join artists Benjamin Barra and Oliver Getley for the opening of their collaborative exhibition ‘waiting’ at LAX on Friday 15 August, 6 – 9pm. ‘waiting’ is the outcome of an ongoing joint studio-based research project. For two years, Barra and Getley have been exploring ways in which to communicate with each other through playful exercises of object arrangement, juxtaposition and displacement. In this way, they have been testing what meaning ordinary objects can carry in their unlimited combinations and configurations, with the help of expanded conceptions of literary devices such as metaphor, analogy and narrative. Bringing together an arrangement of found objects, architectural interventions and materials referencing their activity up to this point, ‘waiting’ at LAX reflects on the many possible ‘places’ this space could be. Opening night: Friday 15 August, 6 – 9pm Other opening times: Monday 18 August, 12 – 6pm Wednesday 20 August, 12 – 6pm Tuesday 26 August, 12 – 6pm Wednesday 27 August, 12 – 6pm Additional viewing appointments can be arranged via email: [email protected] Address: FiiK Studios, 28 Cross Stamford Street, Leeds, LS7 1BA (entrance behind Billions Lounge) What3words: ///wicked.money.await Access: Regrettably, FiiK has no step-free access and is located up three flights of stairs.
