On Wednesday our members traveled to Albany to help urge lawmakers to pass the NY FAIR News Act, which would establish protections for journalists and the public to ensure that the integrity of the news and its workforce are safeguarded against AI. The NY FAIR News Act has been endorsed by a broad coalition of unions representing workers throughout New York’s news media sector, including us, @wgaeast , @directorsguild , @sagaftra and more. From our president @susandecarava : “Now more than ever, New Yorkers need the FAIR News Act so we can all trust that the news we consume is made by and for humans.”
Unionized journalists across North America have come together to sound the alarm: Media companies are implementing artificial intelligence in ways that damage the credibility of the journalism on which you rely. You deserve people-powered journalism, not AI-generated slop. That’s why we are launching “News, Not Slop,” a national campaign demanding accountability and transparency from media bosses about their use of AI. Yesterday, the WGAE and allies traveled to Albany to rally legislators to pass the NY FAIR News Act (S.8451/A.8962-A) — a bill with bipartisan support that establishes real protections for journalists and media professionals against the unchecked use of AI in newsrooms, and ensures public trust in the news.
Joined by journalists and union leaders from @sagaftra , @nyguild , @directorsguild , @cwadistrict1 and @nysaflcio , our coalition made the case to legislators that AI in journalism must come with transparency, human oversight, and safeguards for the people who do the work.
Thank you to Senator Pat Fahy (@patfahy46 ) and Assemblymember Nily Rozic (@nihlyrozic ) for sponsoring this bill, and to everyone who spoke: Assemblymember Emily Gallagher (@emilyassembly ), WGAE member Mary Harris, SAG-AFTRA Chief Labor Policy Officer and Executive Director of the New York Local Rebecca Damon, NewsGuild of New York member Jason Cohen, DGA member Scott Berger, WGAE Executive Director Sam Wheeler and WGAE AI Task Force Co-Chair Larry Cohen.
There’s just a few weeks left in this legislative session and we’re working hard to get this crucial piece of legislation passed. Pass the #NYFAIRNewsAct ✊
We are incredibly proud of our members who won or were finalists for the 2026 Pulitzer Awards. Democracy depends on their journalism and it’s why we fight for – and win – strong contracts to protect our members’ ability to do their work.
Yesterday, in honor of International Workers’ Day, about fifty members and allies of The New Yorker Union and Condé United held a “Dismay Day” rally and leafletting session. We demand the reinstatement of the Fired Four—and we continue to show Condé Nast that we stand strong against their attempts at union busting.
‘These cuts are not only heartless, but threaten to undermine the quality of the content at the core of @condenast ’s business.” Read more from this statement from our @condeunited members on last week’s layoffs.
Today, our @reuters Guild members gave management some food for thought – they collectively took our lunch break to take a stand for a fair contract including wage increases that recognize their value. Fair contract now!

Rich Quan worked remotely as a caregiver for 6 years, but is now being told to abandon his 96-year-old father, who is in an advanced stage of Alzheimer’s Disease, for…office culture?
This is corporate sadism disguised as policy. SHAME on @nytimes 👎

Our @law360union members are demanding that @lexisnexisrisk execs cut ties with ICE. “As a workforce of people from diverse backgrounds, we are concerned our employer’s parent company may be aiding threats to our safety, both on the job as journalists and as members of the public, since ICE now has latitude to target people for arrest based on criteria including real or perceived ethnicity or speaking a language other than English,” a letter signed by more than 200 members reads. Our members made a number of demands, including that executives be transparent about the status of RELX’s contract, and hold a town hall with employees where RELX decision-makers answer questions about the contract.
