Congratulations class of 2026! 🎓🎉 This week, the city proudly celebrated the graduation of the 2026 Management Academy cohort, a leadership development program that has helped strengthen the municipal workforce for more than 20 years. Participants from across city government have spent the last 12 weeks hard at work developing the skills needed to lead the next generation of civil servants. Congratulations to all of this year’s graduates--their work will only further strengthen city government and support the services New Yorkers rely on every day.

In late 2025, DDC broke ground on renovations to the Astoria Library. As part of the renovations, two murals—Circus and Grand Finale of an Opera Scene—created by noted muralist Max Spivak under the WPA’s Federal Art Project, will also be restored and reframed. The murals, originally installed in 1938 in the former children’s room on the lower level, remained there until 2003, when they were reinstalled on the first floor. We thank Helen Im from Fine Art Conservation Group for speaking with us about the restoration process.

Last week, DDC joined @jointheboldest , @mocj.nyc and other partners to top off of the Brooklyn Detention Facility in a critical step toward closing Rikers. The installation of the last beam atop the building represents a major milestone for the facility and the Borough-Based Jails Program.

This Earth Week, we are highlighting some of the agency’s efforts to protect New Yorkers from the impacts of climate change. DDC continues to make progress on the East Side Coastal Resiliency (ESCR) and Brooklyn Bridge-Montgomery Coastal Resilience (BMCR) projects in Manhattan, installing 900 feet of shoreline flood protection in the first four months of FY2026. In 2025, DDC launched its third major coastal resiliency effort in Red Hook, Brooklyn, a $218 million project that will create a two-mile series of floodwalls, floodgates, and other infrastructure enhancements stretching across Atlantic Basin and Beard Street. These projects are aimed to reduce flood risk due to coastal storms and sea level rise, protecting communities, properties, businesses, critical infrastructure, and public open spaces. In addition to flood protection, the projects will strengthen and enhance waterfront spaces by improving accessibility, ecological diversity, and delivering improved recreational amenities.

DDC joined @nycparks and @nyc_dot representatives this week to welcome Council Member Feliz and a member of his team for a tour of the sidewalk restoration project work around Crotona Park in the Bronx. This location is a small part of a larger Prior Notice Sidewalks project which involves multiple sites around the borough, replacing sidewalks to both public and private properties. 7,486 square feet of sidewalk has been repaired at this location along with 642 feet of curb.
