Hey everyone. Apologies for stepping away for a bit but it’s been a challenging past few months. I recently celebrated my 40th birthday and was thankful to enjoy some excellent BBQ from
@bark_barbecue with my family. If you haven’t visited Bark, make sure you stop by and give them some love. But outside of my birthday (which also included 2+ hours of glorious karaoke at
@babygrandnyc ), things have admittedly been hard.
I’ve been searching for a full-time job after being laid off last year, and it’s been seriously stressful. Two hard-to-contain toddlers, random illnesses, a sick cat, snow that won’t leave, and rising fascism haven’t helped the mood either. Most of my barbecue effort has gone into producing
@thesmokesheet , my national newsletter that has a larger audience than NYCBBQ. I am hoping to get back to showcasing the best barbecue and live-fire in NY, NJ, and CT this spring as the weather gets better and it’s easier to get the kids out. Special thanks to my awesome wife
@stackach for valiantly supporting me and the fam during this crazy time.
I know I’m not the only one feeling this moment, including many of my BBQ restaurant friends that are barely getting by OR my journalism friends that have been laid off in the name of “cost savings” OR my neighbors that are scared to drop their kids off at school. Many of us have this enormous weight but are trying not to show it.
Looking ahead to the rest of 2026, I want to feel inspired and get people excited about new things. I want to tell stories of people, restaurants, and food that are underrepresented and show what makes this region special. Hit me up if you want to work on something, tell me about a wildly good meal you had, or are hiring for content roles. Let’s meet this moment with kindness and good vibes. I’ll see you soon.
