Childhood Cancer Action Days, held annually in Washington D.C., gives childhood cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, family members, and advocates the opportunity to meet with their state legislators in person to advocate and share their first-hand experiences with childhood cancer. We were joined by @trfdotorg and @Cure4theKids to advocate for increased funding for research and to share how childhood cancer impacts children and their families right here in Nevada. This year, Congress passed the Accelerating Kids' Access to Care Act and the Mikaela Naylon Give Kids a Chance Act into law. These two policies, which address some of the most pressing needs related to pediatric drug development, clinical trials, and access to care, represent the most influential childhood cancer legislation since the passage of the original Childhood Cancer STAR Act in 2018. Please join us in welcoming two of the newest members of the NNCCF team: Emily Najera, our Director of Development and Marketing, and Alexandra Macdonald, our Programs & Services Coordinator! As NNCCF’s Director of Development and Marketing, Emily helps tell the stories behind the mission. From the families NNCCF supports to the donors and community partners who help make it all possible. She brings a creative eye, a love for storytelling and a passion for connecting people to causes that matter. “I was drawn to NNCCF because this organization truly shows up for families,” Emily shared. “I’m grateful to be part of a team that cares so deeply for this community.” Alexandra, originally from Las Vegas, moved to Reno to study journalism and media production, where she discovered her passion for storytelling, creativity and serving others. As NNCCF’s Programs & Services Coordinator, Alex helps coordinate family events, bell ringings and family socials, creating meaningful moments for the families NNCCF supports. “I’ve always wanted to work in a nonprofit space with a higher purpose,” Alexandra said. “After seeing the impact NNCCF has on families, I knew I wanted to be part of this mission.” We’re so excited to have Emily and Alex on the team! ✨

✨ Warrior Wednesday | Meet Loukas 💛 Loukas loves Star Wars, karate, and an all-out Nerf war. He is the kind of kid who makes every room more fun just by walking into it. In 2023, Loukas was in one of the hardest seasons of his life facing osteosarcoma. That’s when the Nevada Air National Guard’s High Rollers made a special trip just for him. They flew a C-130 right over his house and showed up with a flight suit, a helmet, and an official call sign: Jedi. Because when a community loves you, they show up in the biggest ways they know how. And that community never left his side. Last week, that journey came full circle. Loukas walked into the Col. Mike Fugett Memorial Golf Tournament and was reunited with the @nevadanationalguard , the same crew that showed up for him when he needed it most. Still together. Still showing up for each other. Today Loukas is 10 years old, and in 5th grade out here living his absolute best life. We could not be more proud of you, Loukas. In 2023, Col. Mike Fugett of the @nevadaairguard helped host a golf tournament benefitting Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. During the event, he shared his vision for making the tournament an annual tradition, emphasizing the importance of supporting local childhood cancer families in partnership with NNCCF. This speech would be the last words many of his friends would hear from him, as he passed shortly after, leaving behind his wife and two daughters. Since then, the Friends and Family of Col. Mike Fugett have continued the tournament in his honor through the Col. Mike Fugett Memorial Golf Tournament. In just three years, the event has grown from raising just over $500 to more than $22,000 for childhood cancer warriors and their families. This year, the tournament even sold out despite more than 100 Air Guardsmen being deployed. More than a tournament, this event is a testament to Col. Last week, NNCCF went all in for local children and families facing cancer! ♥️ 🐎 It was the 19th annual All in for Childhood Cancer poker tournament and everyone came out dressed up in Kentucky Derby flair and played poker together. The night was so much fun, and this community set the tone for an unforgettable night full of heart. It was incredible to see everyone come together to stand beside local children and families facing cancer and to help carry them through some of their hardest days. May is National Cancer Research Month, a time to recognize the critical role research plays in the fight against cancer and to honor the patients, families, researchers, and advocates driving progress forward. 💛 At NNCCF, we’re proud to partner with @stbaldricks in support of lifesaving childhood cancer research. Through 21 years of Shave for the Brave, our community has shaved more than 5,000 heads and raised over $4 million since 2006. The reality is stark: 1 in 263 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer before age 20, and childhood cancer is still the leading cause of disease-related death among children. Advancing research isn’t optional; it’s essential. That’s why we remain committed to supporting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest private funder of childhood cancer research.
