In @foreignpuzzle , Mexican American dancer and mother Sharon Marroquin choreographs her way through breast cancer treatment, processing the unprocessable — translating the impermanence, the fear, and the fight into movement. For Women of Color, cancer is more aggressive, and the burden of care is immense. She navigates intensive treatment while raising her 6-year-old son and teaching elementary school - because you need a full-time job for health insurance. Her experience quietly speaks to what so many in racial and ethnic minority communities know too well: the gaps in support, the invisible labor of being sick while holding everything together, the stories that rarely make it to the screen. This is my first long-form film. I made it as I was transitioning out of physical therapy, and it brings together my creative and health care communities. With the heaviest of hearts, but an unmeasurable amount of gratitude for the years of amazing memories we had together. Remy, my adventure pup came into my life unexpectedly and changed it in all the best ways. My constant companion, who has seen me through some of the best moments in life, providing enormous amounts of joy and laughter; also walked beside and comforted me in the most tumultuous and worse of times. She has been the best teacher of living in the moment, embracing the unknown with a sense of wonder, that sometimes it benefits to have a short term memory, and to always be gracious. Even with less than an ideal start, Remy proved that where you go, how you live and love was more important and she did that to the fullest. She loved adventures, treats, sunsets and all the cuddles.
