The work that changes you is the work no one is paying for. I talk about personal work all the time, and for good reason. This is from a recent shoot with Sue Ann Pien @sueannpien as part of my cinematic portrait series. I ask actors to step into roles they have always wanted to play. For myself, I build in challenges. This series I have worked with a fixed wide lens, @leicacamerausa Q2, stepping away from my usual longer focal lengths. I also brought in the @westcottlighting Ice Light 2 and leaned into color, which is not something I typically do. New tools. New approach. Same goal. And that is exactly the point. If you are not doing personal work, here is why you should be. 1. You control everything No creative director. No marketing team. No trend chasing. This is where you define how you actually see the world. 2. Collaboration hits different When everyone is there by choice, the energy changes. You are building something together, not just executing a job. In this case, working with an incredible team made all the difference. 3. You challenge yourself New locations. New gear. New ways of seeing. This is where you build depth. This is where you sharpen instincts. This is what makes you better when it counts. And maybe the most important part. Everyone involved is invested. Whether it is one subject or a full team, people show up differently. They are rooting for the outcome. That energy is real. That is what personal work gives you. Growth you cannot fake. Something a little…DIFFERENT! For my latest portrait for my #personalwork series #CinematicPortraits I enlisted the incredible @sueannpien to come up a character for me. She did not disappoint. This series is a personal challenge to capture portraits with a fixed lens @leicacamerausa Q2. Forcing a different perspective on portraits from most of my work. I decided for this one, I’d use @westcottlighting #icelights and damn I fell in love with these portable LEDs. No gels, all the control is built in!
